you have to put them in a column formation first, they will not do this themselves if you just click for them to go across... also, if you are playing on huge unit sizes, this will be much more difficult, however, it still works fine as long as you put them in columns which are a bit thinner than the bridge.

Bingo^. It would also be wise to line them up before you send them marching over the bridge. If they march onto the bridge at an angle, they might get "stuck" on the bridge itself.
