Hey guys, I've been talking to dvk901 about adding some modeling in for RS. I've often seen wonderful legionaries using the default rtw swords, and to me it ruined the look, soooo after a long time lurking around the forums and doing stuff on my pc for just me, and after RS drew me back in to RTW, I would like to go ahead and give something back.
My skills are limited for now, but at present I am working on making better equipment for the higher LOD models. Currently, I have 4 different types of Gladius made, depending on the time periods the units are in. hastati, principii, and triarii all receive gladius hispaniensis, and if I'm not mistaken the velites and other auxiliaries should receive these as well. with the caesarian and augustinian legions ive been using fulham and mainz type swords, and the late imperial legions will have pompeii type swords. Generals, decurions, and cavalry will get spathas, and i'd like to give centurions the same swords as the units they are with, though that may mean having separate centurions for different eras.
I've been using this site
http://www.larp.com/legioxx/gladius.html
as a general reference to hilt/scabard designs, and there was a nifty drawing
http://www.larp.com/legioxx/blades.gif
here that actually gave good outlines and scale references to make the swords from. I used the presumption that the swords in the game were supposed to be pompeii types, so i scaled the swords to the original game sword. Here are the 4 current gladii, posed with a principes shield and helmet. With some better textures for the hilts and such, they could look much better.

From left to right, they are gladius hispaniensis, Mainz, Fulham, and Pompeii. You can see how much longer the hispaniensis is than the pompeii, so in-game the hispaniensis seems fairly long, but then again it was a longer sword. The site above has some really good links to original museum finds and such, which is where they reference their replicas and equipment.
In any case, here is the princeps with the hispaniensis.

I'll have the caesarian and augustinians up soon. If there's any thing glaringly wrong, let me know. it may be good to lay out a difinitive timeline of what was used when, so everything will kind of flow together from an equipment standpoint. And yes, I make long winded posts
OH, almost forgot, I could easily update the models in like, and afternoon. i have a pretty good routine down, so i'm pretty quick at it.
