Icon5 The faction for a Heavy Infantry/Cavalry player

I love the Byzantines, and Egypt is pretty cool too!

But I autoresolve nearly every battle because my fighting style is heavy infantry, and HEAVY cavalry, rather than trash spearmen and horse archers.

    Which faction am I describing?

NOTE: I am playing Stainless Steel 5.1

France or the Holy Roman Empire. Spain and Portugal might interest you, but their heavies come in very late.

England's cavalry is competent, but fields nothing that can compare with French Lancers or HRE Gothics, both of which are in superior full plate and riding the heaviest mounts you can get. Their charge is supreme.

Denmark... take Hamburg right away. If HRE has it try to buy it from them, if not go to war right away you will need this castle to hold scandanavia and U get good troops from it.

(and it can't take 120 turns to get these hard hitting units)

a rich mans unit user eh? im playing SS 5.0 so this wont be 100% accurate but i believe you are describing either France, HRE, Spain, or COA (if you have SS).
all of them get decent heavy troops in both cav and dismounted varietys. possibly Poland too if you will forgive thier lack of heavy infantry in the beginning of the game.

lol sher khan beat me to it. also nice sig.

You should download that Dismounted Khasseki mod, that will give Egypt some good Heavy Infantry. Egypt will then be a good heavy inf/heavy cav with Khasseki and Royal Mamluks if you want them it. They will be very powerful until the Janissary Heavy Infantry arrives...

Poland's calvary dominates. But they don't get anything good until late. I would say the France because they get good calvary early on. I have used Denmark a lot lately. Played them several different ways. They're one of my favorites but their units early on and late game aren't really standout. They hold their own, but they aren't an elite.

Venice has some good heavy infantry and ok calvary, and they are close to the Byzantine Empire.

Why migrate? It'll be good to experience another part of the map instead of Greece, my friend.

This may differ depending on the mod but...

France, in general, can field the heaviest cavalry in the most numbers. Their infantry isn't that special until High and Late periods, but their Dismounted Noble Knights are monsters on the field. Scots Guard and Aventuriers make for an impressive, plate-armored missile infantry that can also double as good light-medium infantry.

HRE fields powerful cavalry too, but few as well armored except for their Gothic Knights. The big bonus the HRE has comes from their Armor Piercing maces. Almost all of their cavalry carries them, and thus they can best most other cavalry in melee quite well. They also get a good number of two-handed heavy infantry units. Their missile infantry is not as impressive, however.

The French can also field professional armies, that is, they can make a full army with missile troops, heavy infantry, and heavy cavalry from just a city by late game. By this I mean you can field Scots Guard, Voulge Militia, Pikemen, and Gendarmes from a Huge City.

The HRE must rely more on their castles to deploy usable armies.

I know I might be opening myself to a bit of ridicule, since the faction I am going to suggest is the only faction I have played, to date. However, I have some research in the FAUST and in custom battles to augment my meagre campaign experience. Here goes...

    Have you considered England?

Let's start with heavy infantry. Many people are raving about the JHI and how overpowered they are. JHI cost 840 to recruit + 175 per turn. Assuming the lifetime of a unit is 7 turns (including the turn in which they are recruited) then the unit total cost is 840 + 1050 = 1890 florins. An English Armored Swordsman (EAS) unit costs 610 to recruit + 150 per turn. A 7 turn total cost is 610 + 900 = 1510 florins. This makes the EAS just under 80% of the cost of a JHI unit. Said another way, you can have 5 EAS units for the cost of 4 JHI units. And what happens when you pit 5 EAS against 4 JHI? In the custom battles I ran with similar ratios (e.g., 13 EAS vs 10 JHI) and with purposefully dimwitted generalship on my part, the JHI got their clock cleaned EVERY time, BIG time. It was never even close. I have also seen EAS perform quite well in my campaign against dismounted feudal knights; and, for that matter, anything that can't outrun them.

So, you can get very solid HI in multiple castles by about turn 60 (I did it by turn 70, and I was focused on cav, not infantry).

Cav is a bit trickier, and I honestly don't know how I did this (someone please tell me)...

The best cav generally available have stats of 13/17. The English Knights are only 10/16, and their precursors, the mailed knights, are a bland 10/14. However, I made gobs of these mailed knights. In the large numbers I recruited, they perform quite acceptably. Eventually I accepted several offers from the Knights Hospitalier to build chapter houses. As of about turn 75, I had at least 3 of these houses and could build lots of these bad boys (13/16). I also join crusades for the express purpose of recruiting Crusader knights (13/17). Of course, I also am building tourney fields and armorers, to squeeze even more punch into my knights.

I hope you found this interesting.

If you play my mod, the answer is............ BYZANTINES!

I reconfigured their unit tree so that Byzantine Infantry (Heavy Inf) and Byzantine Lancers (Heavy Cav) are available from the start.

interesting.........england would be rather interesting.....and I wouldn't need to migrate if I wanted to travel. Just crusade and inhabit the new territory and my island.........milan would also be good because they don't need castles.........choiceschoiceschoices

and then there's always france and HRE

France or HRE would be a good fit as to units and both would give you the ability to quickly sail units to Constaninople and to Jerusalem also.
