    Default I hate Mongols.

    Hello to all,

I am a enourmous fan of Medieval, already have played them all (except Kingdoms). Even that it is my first time posting here, i really love to read this forum and all the comunity is great.

Well, i have always had a dream in mind: having ALL the setlements in this Medieval Total War II. Normally i play with Denmark, Scotland or my home Portugal and i don't go that far. So i started with France in Normal Difficulty and made my campaign.

Well, now by accident i put my campaign in risk. First, i had two enourmous fleets with two giant army's to help the king, but the egyptians surprised me and all my armies went swimming with the fishs of the Great Sea.

Then, i put my king, that had a reasonable power (in the print he already had 1 heavy defeat against Mongols) in the middle of the Mongols.

I am not specialist in Mongols, so i ask for your help. What can we do to destroy them? I was thinking in creating a sort of "defending line", something like from Denmark to Venice, try to make the mongols spread out and win them individualy, then try sucessive camebacks. What you suggest me?

    Cheers

I also hate fighting them bcs they of their horse archers, and archers in general. It is such a pain to catch up with them. Artilery is not precise enough to take care of them.
I have 2 strategies against them:
1)Divide et Impera: Have 3-4 full stack armies around. Aproach the mongol horde and only fight them when you have total supremecy in numbers(like 3 armies against one mongolian one). Use the autoresolve so you don't waste time chasing horse archers around...
2)You could make cities/castles strongpoints. Fill them up with powerful dismounted knights, armoured spearmen and some archers. Sooner or later they will attack in force. Try to hold on although you will get some casualties from their archers. But there is no chance that they can conquer your settlement.
Good luck and by the way...Nice campaign. I love playing with France(Ohh...You could use the Serpentine against the Mongols. The Serpentine is a anti-infantry artilery and it works well against cav).

Gee, never seen the mongols that high up. Make lots of forts, then fortify them with spear men. Hold the gate with spears.

    I had one as English.
Put all the spearmens at the gate when they attacks. (in my case I used wooden stakes behind the gate too)

Couple of things you can do in that situation. Retreat, and hope they move to the east or north. Get a bunch of assassins and kill all their generals (Actually the assassins get em pretty easily). Or you can fight them with a bunch of Pikemen and Archers on the bridges/castles in the map. The third one works really well. Set up the pikemen on one end of the bridge about three or four units deep and have archers on each side of them. Aventeriurs (Whatever their correct spelling is) and Voulger/Pikemen take them down fast. Another great addition to the French arsenal is the French Mounted Longbow Man. Those guys are great archers and have great range. Oh and one extra, down where Hungary and the Byzantine Empire used to be there are Serbian Knights. They are extremely good for their prices, so I suggest investing in atleast one unit in your army for capturing prisoners/running down archers.

I love the challenge of the mongols. To me they are the personification of the already frustrating hungarians/byzantines as they can both field a fair ammount of HA.

I tend to hold up in castles or at bridges. Sallying when sieged is great with no timers and bridge defending negates the cavalry a bit.

    Tip
For me, when defending a bridge, use full exp ballista and have them lower than the bridge on the bank of the river if you can. If they are lower than the forces you shoot at then because of the curving trajectory of the spear you can take out up to twice the number that you would if they were on the same level.

When I have broken the back of the mongol threat I tend to have a go at them in the open field. Its nice to be humbled once in a while without it being too important campaign wise. And when you do beat them in the field (not very often and still taking heavy losses) it is sooooo sweet!
Hit them as hard as you can, as fast as you can, where its going to hurt them the most..... and preferably when theyre not looking!

    1) Try to avoid field battles - and get yourself Cannon towers if possible
2)If you must fight in the field either:
    - have lots of high quality missile inftr.
    - try to kill his inftr. non missile cav. the missile cav. will be lured into a melee by this
    - try to sourround his horse archers with a combination of light and heavy cav. -> charge

Thanks to all for their help

I managed to defeat all the 10 full stacks of mongols with less that 7/8 stacks by me, and about 20 turns.

I think that the strongholds are the most important. I had a period of defeats, but after my 300 dismount feudal knights and 150 knights managed to keep an entire mongol army in the gates of Vilnius castle, i managed to turn things back. I've put 3 stacks in north, east and south, and crush the single stacks that went against me. Then i push forward and the russians also give a hand, by killing the mongols at the east.

The assassins are fabulous also. I had two assassins with maximum stars and they gave a great help by killing the oponnent generals. I think it was important also to have spies to control things up.

It is quite a challenge, but i passed from 200.000 florins to -20.000 florings :/ my whole economical strategy went off.

Now.... France will conquer all the setlements in the living world

Thanks for all once again for the nice tips.

PS: I think that i discovered the most funny thing of the game... Chasing the mongol archers and missile infantry with my feudal knights

By the way, why don't you take the province all the way to the south-west (Marrakesh) ? It's a great money-maker !

You can only get there via Timbuktu, but it's worth it :-)
