Girl Born With 8 Limbs Conscious, Smiles
Indian Girl Born With 4 Arms And 4 Legs Conscious, Smiling After Surgery

A 2-year-old Indian girl born with four arms and four legs regained consciousness Friday, wiggled her toes and smiled at her parents, 48 hours after massive surgery removed the extra limbs, doctors said.

Lakshmi, who has been revered by some in her village as a reincarnation of the four-armed Hindu goddess she was named for, was still in intensive care. But she was "doing well" as doctors slowly stopped sedating her, said Dr. Mamatha Patil, Sparsh Hospital spokeswoman.

"She had smiled at us and moved her limbs," Patil said. Besides her toes, the girl also moved her arms, Patil said.

Doctors were planning to take the girl off a respirator later Friday but were still monitoring her closely during the critical 72-hour period following the operation, she said.

Lakshmi was born joined at the pelvis to a "parasitic twin" that stopped developing in her mother's womb. The surviving fetus absorbed the limbs, kidneys and other body parts of the undeveloped fetus.

On Wednesday, a team of more than 30 surgeons concluded the 24-hour operation, removing the extra limbs, transplanting a kidney from the twin and reconstructing Lakshmi's pelvic area.

Doctors said the complicated surgery was a great success, meaning she would not need further major reconstructive surgery. However, Lakshmi will need further treatments and possible surgery for clubbed feet before she will be able to walk.

Children born with deformities in deeply traditional rural parts of India such as the remote village in the northern state of Bihar that Lakshmi hails from are often viewed as reincarnated gods. But some had sought to make money from Lakshmi. Her parents kept her in hiding after a circus apparently tried to buy the girl, they said.

Her father, Shambhu, who only goes by one name, had told reporters that her family had been worried for her future before the operation and he was looking forward to seeing her with "a normal body."
Wow. this is some crazy ****. Although if I was born with 8 limbs I would want to keep all the working ones . hahah that would be really cool.

When I first saw this, I thought of the Hindu god Shiva.

But seriously, this is terrible. These bad "twin" scenarios are just terrible, like the guy in China who had a twin coming out of his right ear.

    That's a bit cruel, Medicus.

At any rate, I'm glad the girl has the chance at a normal life now.

Well more like a 1/6 chance it would have been India.

I just find it odd that you never see things like this in Western Nations. Where's AUSTRALIA'S Octopus Girl?!

Well there could be a possibility of Australia joining the "We have an Octopuss girl" club but to be truthful it's all about statistics. 1/6 of the Worlds population (there abouts) is Indian. So doesn't it make sense that they are more likely to have an interestingly deformed baby being born there than elsewhere (excluding China who wins the "We have more people than you" game but not the interestingly deformed child game)?

We are doing well in this category in Britain as we had Joseph Merrick aka The Elephant Man. LINK.

It's probably because companies from "western nations" used to throw their waste on "developing countries" and not on the "western nations" backyard...

Wow, she's lucky to be OK. The lower part looked creepy to me.

Imagine her creating a unique fighting skill

Three words: Prenatal health services. They are woefully lacking in many of the countries where deformed babies are formed. There's been plenty of conjoined twins in the Western world. They simply are born in countries where surgery can occur early, rather than years later, so you don't see eight year olds with useless limbs.

Most of the more extreme cases we hear about are actually fatal to the child. Western countries have the health facilities to not only discover those fatal deformities early but also the means to abort the fetus long before birth.

But no, to follow your point then it happens in third world countries because their genes are inferior to Western genes

I hope that this girl has a quick recovery after the surgery, if she does get it. She does seem to be in healthy condition, apart from her deformity.

I think she still has club feet though. Too bad. If I was her I would have kept all the limbs and became spider-woman!
