what is causing my generals to get the superstition or silly beliefs trait, one general in particular who had the defender of faith ancillery and a cardinal in his stack got these traits, and a lot of my generals are getting them. any ideas why?

Characters can get it by random when they come of age, if their father has that trait and if they are damaged by disasters. The chances are very slim but once they have the basic level, there is a small chance each turn that the trait will get worse.
I think it's like the dogmatic trait for diplomats. It's mainly religous environments. Also havin priests preach to them. Good generals will either have priests and high piety or be 'mostly rational' and have higher moral.
Try to keep children away from priests.

ok thanks, i have done some tests and it seems they get it more, the more time they spend outside instead of inside a settlement, as well as the disasters affect
