While this is a topic best suited to after the release, I think it wouldn't hurt to start one now even though opinions would be driven on speculation and assumptions.
Broken Crescent's setting has offered a chance at some more innovative units for the Medieval Era, hardly becoming a place ruled by simple spearmen and crossbowmen or horse archers. While pretty much all unit types have a basis in the Vanilla game and existed there already, through quality of the unit and especially their frequency I'd say we have 'invented' certain unit types to occur with enough frequency to be counted alongside spearmen, swordsmen, or archers as staple units.
So the experience has been shaken up to near the sort of diversity the ancient times had, and it's worth seeing what unit types we're all interested in!
How you could go about classifying them is hard to count, and if you don't know what unit type you like, just state a few units you feel are similar to one you greatly enjoy. Classifications can overlap, too.
A few examples to get your mind started include:
- Light/Medium/Heavy lancers
- "Semi Superheavy cavalry" (Those with felt or mail barding. Jerusalem Knights, Khorasani Cavalry, non-bodyguard narkharar)
- Cataphracts - Obvious, I hope.
- Light/Medium/heavy/Superheavy Javelin Cavalry
- Light/Medium/Heavy/Superheavy Horse Archers
- Elephants
- Camel Units
- Light/Medium/Heavy spearmen.
- Pikemen
- Hybrid Archers - Those with some armor, a shield, sidearm and abow.
- Hybrid Javelineers (Or Daylami-style units)
- Light/Medium/Heavy Melee Infantry (1 handed Axe, Mace, or Sword)
- 2 Handed Infantrymen
- "Unbreakables" - Kshatriya Infantry/Cavalry, Jihad Ghulams, Ghazi, Templars.
For me, my favorite are two which experienced a renaissance in Broken Crescent, being rare or largely absent in Vanilla MTWII. Both also kind of play off the same theme, that of a Hybrid, one being more towards the ranged portion, the other the melee.
- Hybrid Archers
- Are those with shield, bow, and a sidearm. Typically they are at least medium-armored, the vanilla origin being the Ottoman Infantry.
- Examples include: Ghaznavid Regular Bowmen and Ghulam Infantry, Sindhi Jagir Archers, and Ayyubid Mamluk Archers.
- They are kind of the ranged-oriented Hybrids, being more "An archer with armor, a shield and a weapon" rather than "Infantrymen with bows".
- I haven't used them quite as much in BC, but their role is also invaluable. When you have a unit which can fire on enemy's from the wall, and then promptly switch to a hand-held weapon and shield, you're in for a good fight. Not to mention they can easily fire on an enemy behind the line, then promptly reinforce that line or swing around to hit their flanks
- Hybrid Javelineers [or Daylami-Style Infantry]
- Are those with shield, sidearm, and javelins (AP or not). They can be any range of armor, but have to not skirmish. Closest thing vanilla had to them was Afghan Javelinmen or Almughavars
- Examples include: Daylami, Soomro Warriors, Vishap Infantry, Rum turk Frontiersmen, Ghorid Nobles
- They are kind of the melee-oriented hybrids, being more "Infantrymen with Javelins" than "Skirmishers with armor, a shield, and a weapon".
- I've come to love this type of unit. A free one-two punch of ranged attack before the charge? It makes me question why use infantry who can't! While few actually pack that pilum-esque punch (Ghorid Nobles, Heavy daylami, and Soomro warriors are those to have it, I think), the free extra punch is easily appreciated.
Appearance wise, I just love light/medium spear or lance and sidearm armed cavalrymen.
