    Default Compatibility

I recently dowwnloaded the MTW2 demo and a good computer
    with thes specs:
Intel® Core™2 Quad processor Q6600; Intel® Viiv™ technology; 3GB DDR2 memory; DL DVD±RW/CD-RW drive; Labelflash technology; 500GB hard drive; Windows Vista Home Premium NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT graphics with 256MB video memory and DirectX 10 support; high-definition audio (7.1-channel support); S-video and DVI-I connections

yet the game still runs horrible, even at low settings
could someone tell me why this is

also, is the graphic card ok, i thought it was a good but iam not sure
it is frustrerating to have bought the best computer in my best buy store
and not be able to play a game that is a year old

Well I believe I know what your problem is and you wont be happy hehe
Your MODERN cpu is not good for gaming, games struggle with support of dual core cpu's and most of them (like medieval) dont have the support yet. Now quad core gaming is years away as it would require reprogramming everything.
Now as far as your video card, I dont think it will be a problem as I used to play he game on gf6800 256mb on high detail and huge unit size and it worked pretty much ok.

Anyways thats sad but true that single core old cpu's can outrun brand new dual or quad cores in some games...

Is there not a way do make it so you only use one core of the processor

Actually i think it works ok but do you think with those
computer specs it should be able to play at high settings with huge armies

hmm,it seems to me that you chould be able to play on high specs, for you seem to have everything in order,I will tell you though that Medieval is not really completely compatible with Vista,so you may be running into a problem with that, and also M2TW is not really designed and tested with DirectX10 in mind, and this has been known to lead to performance issues like image tearing and slowdown.

Can you give me the link, I'd like to download a new graphics card

Most games, like M2TW, do not support dual cores (let alone quad cores), and while they will run on dual/quad cores, they don't get the benefit out of them. What makes M2TW special though, is the fact that M2TW not only benefits from dual/quad cores, but actually runs slower.

Like you said, you could set the process affinity to a single core, and increase it's priority a bit, but don't expect miracles here. To do this, start M2TW, when it's started, use [Windows key]+[tab] to return to the desktop, start the taskmanager, tick the processes tab, right-click on M2TW.exe, click on Set affinity, and uncheck all cores but one (check core 1,2 or 3, since 0 is likely to be used by single core apps). You can change priority in the same menu, but be sure not to put it on real time. Just put it on high.

About that graphics card, I have to disagree with the others. It is the odd one out in your system. It's a low-end graphics card. Basta.

Thanks for the help. Does anyone know of a patch that supports the use of a quad core processor? Plus, If i bought a new graphics card, can someone tell me which one is good and wheather it is needed for my computer or just that games do not use quad core processors?

If you want the bang for the buck, get yourself an nVidia 8800GT. Costs around €220 euro's here in The Netherlands, prob. cheaper when you live somewhere else. I'm waiting for mine to be delivered. It outperforms the 8800GTS, and it almost equals the 8800GTX on "lower" resolutions like 1280*1024.

If you think that's way to much money for a graphics card, then you will have to live with lower settings and less eye candy. Be advised that just one of my 7800GT's alone (almost 2 y.o.) prob. outperforms your newer 8500GT. And even with two of them I'm not able to max everything out, without big city siege battles running like crap.

Another shot: go to the nVidia control panel, got the menu "Manage 3D settings", mark the option named "Texture filtering - Quality" and select either "Performance" or "High performance" in the drop down menu next to it.

    so a 7800 beats a 8500 graphic card?

Yes it does. And it does this hands down. Even the 7800GS and the 7600GT outperforms it. They prob. even outperform a standard clocked 8600GT. Both 7800's most certainly will.

    But it isn't that strange: A 5 y.o. BMW M5 will still outperform a brand new 525i.

Well i have a quad core cpu and the game runs perfectly smooth (all video settings to high and the resolution to 1680x1050).

Maybe the fact that i run it on a x64 system and OS is helping, and diminishes the negative effect you are describing. But never the less it runs perfect.

My OS is x64 also (XPx64). Although the game runs smooth on my rig as well, M2TW will run faster on a high end P4 processor than on my E6750 Core 2 Duo or your quad core. The AI movements in large battles require a lot from the processor, and since M2TW doesn't support dual/quad cores, it's all down to just one of the cores, which is, on it's own, less powerfull than that high end P4 processor...

@Bassman211: Like I posted before: At this moment, the most value for money is the nVidia 8800GT card.

Ok, but do you think a patch will readily be available for MTW2 soon?

    That supports quad processors

I don't think so bassman21. Quads are fairly new tech and it will take some time to be adopted by the games industry (that means fully supported).

Still the whole problem is that they need to change the core of the game, and make it from single threaded to multi threaded application. Not an easy task at all.

I think all has been said about it. About three times by different people.
