Assassination Reconcile

Ok so I'm playing as France and I get my first mission from another faction, the HRE. The Princes wants me to mess up the king, promising us to be Brothers in arms, 5k florins, and a huge rep increase with them. Sounds good right?

Well I send in 4 spies, yay spies. Then I fail with one Assasssin at 44%, and then they go to war with me. Oh sheet right? Well the second assassin kills him at 34% and the mission is a success.

My reputation goes from Abysmal to Terriblel, I recieve the 5k Florins, but he won't call off his armies... So I'm sitting here going wtf mate? Thought we had a deal, so now I have 4 fronts open and life is pretty hard.

Was really hoping the game would be better than this, but my offer of piece was greatly declined. Oh well, guess that's medieval times right?

Some random thoughts:

a. I sympathize.

b. It sounds pretty realistic, actually. Throughout history, lots of plots have taken unexpected turns that confounded their instigators. Of course, that's easy to say for the guy who doesn't have eight thousand enraged foreigners coming up the driveway of the Palais Royale.

c. I'd like to believe that, somehow, the AI planned the whole thing.

d. Alas, I cannot.

Pity you can't reply it and get a clean kill first time just to see if there is any difference in the HRE reaction to you.

Just keep in mind that something like this could be turned into those convincing medieval Hollywood movies where the Prince plans espionage to inherit the throne earlier. When the plan goes awry, he'd have to act "normal" to prevent the plan being uncovered. The punishment for treason was usually slow, painful death in the torture chamber. So... yeah.

Look at it this way, the prince didn't offer you peace, he just wanted his daddy dead, quietly and discretely; you failed to be discrete and now everyone knows it was you that tried to kill the old man. Even after you brought the prince to power, in the eyes of his people he must avenge his father's death.

It would've been the failed assassination attempt that turned them on you. Imagine that the Prince may be King now but has to answer to an angry faction who knows of your attempt.

If it was a clean kill it may have been a different story. I did one of those missions when I was the Danes for Hungary and it was a positive outcome, mind you I didn't have any failed assassination attempts beforehand.

It's not the failed assassinations attempts per se, but the one you get caught. You may have as many as you wish failed attempts, but as long as your assassins escapes there is no problem (they don't know to whom he belongs).
