The Pope has disappeared!

I don't know what's going on, but here is the deal.

1)Rome got sacked by the Rebs in the first few turns of the game.
2)Having just toggled FOW and going over the map with a fine tooth comb, I cannot find a single city that is held by the Papacy!

Where can he be? The Americas?

But seriously, I can't find a single Family member, Dip, Merchant or ship on the play board that belongs to the Papacy. How can this be?
Playing as the English I need to nurture a good relationship with the Pope, how can I do that if I can't find him?

he might be hiding in some bushes, "ambush". when i attacked rome, which only had like 1 or 2 units in it, i got hit by his big personal army that was hiding. surprised me.

Well I turned off FOW and couldn't find anything. That still doesn't explain why he doesn't have a city though, right?

He turns into a hoard like faction if you take his cities, like the KoJ and Mongols. He will probably be living in the woods someplace in ambush mode, and when an army is in ambush mode you can't see it. Even with FoW off.

I had the same thing happen on Early Era

I was playing spain and pope "horded" and ended up all the way over attacking the Moors

Very interesting. I will check it out. I'm not sure about no diplomats but starting with the americas open and the rebels and aztecs running wild sounds fun

the aztecs are not yet fully functional but i will upload my new version in a few min. which makes them even playable

Well my solution was to retake Rome. Shortly thereafter a message box popped up saying that the Pope would like Rome back thanks very much. So I handed it back and got perfect relations in one hit. So the Pope is back!

In my game he usually was hidden in Marrakesh lol Until i killed all the cardinals and then there was no pope.

How does the pope look like on the battlemap btw? Is he killable in a battle? Or does he not take place in a battle? I don't know, cause usually I want to be best friends with the pope in my campaigns.

Pope is not killable through battles. He doesn't participate in them iirc. He is killable via assassination, but then a new one will be elected by the college of Cardinals.

Furthermore the Papal States don't depend on holding a city/castle to exist. They depend on the Pope existence. If there is no city/castle owned by the Papal states he is a single (or rarely within a stack with a general and army) Papal states unit.

He looks like a normal king ( as far as i recall), and the sound when you capture him ( i don't remember that i killed him or not so i say 'capture") is "the enemy king has been captured ", there's no pop ^^
