Default Protesters beaten up in Georgia

Georgian police have used tear gas and water cannon to dispel opposition demonstrators staging a sixth day of protests in the capital, Tbilisi.

Several people were injured during the clash on the city's main street in front of parliament.
The protesters had been regrouping after an earlier police action forced them off the street.
President Mikhail Saakashvili has rejected the protesters' accusations of corruption and says he will not quit.
Police used tear gas and water cannon after thousands of protesters tried to reclaim Rustaveli Avenue - Tbilisi's main thoroughfare.
The BBC's Matthew Collin in Tbilisi says the police action provoked chaos among the demonstrators, sending them running for cover.
The protesters say the police response demonstrates Mr Saakashvili's authoritarian tendencies.

The opposition said police had arrested two of its leaders and beaten several of its supporters during an earlier raid.
The authorities said they had to act to unblock the city's main thoroughfare and stop protesters from setting up a tent camp there. A government official said the rally could continue on the pavement.
    'Baseless' allegations
Opposition supporters have been gathering outside parliament every day since Friday, when 50,000 people attended the largest street protest seen since the 2003 "Rose Revolution" that brought pro-Western Mr Saakashvili to power.
The protesters accuse him of corruption and of not doing enough to tackle poverty.
They are calling for the president's resignation and want a fresh election.
Many of the protesters back the president's former ally, Irakli Okruashvili, who was arrested last month.
Mr Okruashvili was detained shortly after he said Mr Saakashvili had plotted to kill a top businessman. He was later released on a multimillion-dollar bail and went to Germany. The government says Mr Okruashvili's accusations are "false and baseless".

I wonder whom will support western society when pro-western opposition and pro-western to the bone president struggle?

Ferret, what do you mean? I just want to know opinion of the westerners (while the news is still fresh) before their media formed it.

Usuing crowd dispersal methods to clear a street, and permitting protest on the pavement seems reasonable.

In contrast to the efforts of tiny Israel to make contributions to the world so as to better mankind, one has to ask what have those who have strived to eliminate Israel from the face of the earth done other than to create hate and bloodshed.

What are you talking about? The article is from the BBC, and I only cited what the article stated.

guys, it is much deeper problem than a bunch of protesters being chased by some policemen with water dispencers and rubber bullets.

what currently happens in Georgia right now is MASSIVE RIOTS of the pople who hate their current President and the country itself is in an extremely deep political crisis. very similar to events in Pakistan.

I guess I will have to wait and see who will be the first to ***** about (the corrupt) pro-western govt violently supressing their opposition in Georgia .

because when Russian govt and police used 1/10th of the force mentioned above, in the West they were equated almost to KGB methods and unprovoked massacre of peaceful and freedom-loving people . I am just waiting to see whether or not the West can criticise itself for a change . both Pakistani dictator Musharraf and Georgian US lap-dog Sakashvili are extremely unpopular among the general population...

I heard we (the U.S.) were stepping up some kind of millitray involvement in Georgia, if the Russians were to invade would we defend the Georgians?

what makes you believe that Russians are going to invade Georgia? if anything, US is much more likely to invade, to keep Sakashvili in power.

Because we are Russians, it's enough.

    I find Ferrets opinion ridiculous.
If you hate Russia and everything associated with it for purely pragmatic reasons, at least try not to be so hypocritical as to dismiss the government of Georgia which, despite all you believe, is essentially the same as Putin's, although apparently less popular.

I thought that the US and Russia were allies in the war on terror. Why does every forum flow with fantasies about a war between the two? It's not going to happen.
