    Default Stopping Assassins

I'm playing as the English and my leaders keep getting killed by assassins. France sends about 4 assassins around Caen and they keep trying to kill my faction heir. I sent experienced spies to to these provinces to keep an eye on the assassins, but they still manage to kill my generals/leaders.
This is stupid because there's no way to counter/stop these assassins even though I have spies tracking their moves, which would realistically defeat the purpose of an assassin. It's stupid seeing inexperienced assassins attacking my generals. They probably have a 10% chance to kill me and they attack me 10 times-- me general is dead.

Isn't there a way to use your spies to stop assassins? What are other ways to stop them? Assassinating assassins seems like a stupid way to stop them.

Assassinating assassins is the best way, but it will give some of your generals dread traits.

Did you place your spies in your city, or outside of the city. If they are in the city, they will lower the assassin's chances. If they are outside they can't do anything. It also seems to me that when an own spy is in your settlement, there's a bigger chance enemies are caught and executed. Once your faction leader executed a few assassins, he's pretty much set (they get the assassincatcher trait).

Having an assassin with your general will also lower the chance of his being assassinated; works both in a city and in the field. As pwijnands said though, assassinating them is the best way. The dread is best counteracted through some chivalrous battles: end battle when prompted, release prisoners and occupy. For me, I don't mind a bit when my Faction Leader gets the Master of Assassins trait or ancillary.

    Use your own assasins.

The AI hardly ever uses its assasins on other characters. That means the AI's assasins are weak. Easy pickins for your assasins.

As already suggested use your own assassins against them and put spies with assassins in Caen to help remove/limit there impact on you.

This will prove a short term cure but if they are persistant and return then take a tour around the french provenices, with a spy and find the ones with the buildings that make assassins (Taverns or Brothels iirc). When you have found them destroy them with you assassins.

Or just use my mod. I made it so no one can build assassins. Or merchants. I think both are just annoying to deal with and dont improve the game much.

Use your assassins. Except from their assassination and sabotage capabilities, they also are security officers (when they are with one of your generals).

There are also traits that can be gained from assassins and have to do with the security of important persons, as well as with the security and unrest of a settlement.

Spies make good counter-assassins but I was under the impression that assassins cannot actually contribute to stopping other assassin's work. Just killing them only

Assassins also tend to lower a bit the unrest level of a settlement. That is their main security feature. I imagine that if an assassin is present within a city, certain people that are against the Kingdom meet their end faster than anticipated.

For me it has worked quite sometimes, especially when i take a city where assassins in combination with spies bring the happiness level above 100%

No one seems to be dealing with the issue of how to stop an assasin without other assasins. The answer is simple. Agent squashing. It's also useful to free up space in the college of cardinals. You simply surround an agent, friend or foe, then move in. They can't occupy your space, so they die.

I find this to be a useful tool in the elimination of enemy preachers. I find it hard to believe the local lords would accept this and would dispatch assasins to outrightly kill them or armed forces to apprehend and execute them.
Although there seem to be no repercussions to this method. Remember:
