A couple of issues.

Over-hand spearmen (i.e. hoplites) have a buggy walk/run animation. They just carry the spears as if they were javelins (point down).
German Spearmen and Red Sea Hoplites have the right run animation, but when walking it's still buggy...

Also, charges are incredibly weak, apart from the fact that half the formation stands while the rest charges, I have never, ever, killed a man with an infantry charge, not even from the rear.

Spears are a bit over-powered IMO, and they provide no anti-cavalry bonus.
Most levies have better attack than quality infantry for the simple reason that they have a spear.

The spear animations are a known issue, but haven't been fixed because the EB team currently lacks an animator.

Infantry charges are pretty weak, but they are supposed to be. If you go it just right they can be effective though.

The spear stats are on purpose. Spears give an automatic bonus against cavalry and a negative against infantry by game hardcoding. The spears have been set they way they are so that they don't get a giant negative against infanty after factoring the hardcoding. And with the hardcoding, manual bonuses against cavalry are there are no longer needed.

I think spears have +4 against cavalry and -4 against infantry.
