Yep, crossed my mind as well, naturally - can't imagine Russki engineers not coming up with a quick explanation in that case, though. Water seepage, underground river, whatever.

I went to Mount Gambier a few years ago, which is (somewhat) famous for its sink holes. Trust me, they look EXACTLY like those images.

I think it looks like a sink hole to everybody.

The reluctance of giving the exact cause has probably to do with legal liabilities, but you wonder who left the tap running... or that it's some older mine system noone knew about.

Still interesting. Found a few other big sinkholes in the world BTW:

This one takes a dive in Boesmansgat in South Africa, you can go more than 1000 ft deep in it, apparently.

Obviously a sink hole created by either under ground water ways, broken water pipes or some other water related occurrence (hence the puddle before it all happened). Like you said, they probably don't want to say why it happened for liability reasons.

Look at the soil itself. Why the heck is it so black? To me it looks like it was a slag pile of some sort. Also look at the background, it looks to be located in some industrial area.

check the pipes right hand bottom next to the half-gone building.

Why the black soot? Dunno, apparently there's some coal around there, but this seems VERY shallow indeed (the grass is right on top of it in places), more like some dump.

wow, I viewed some of the other photos, that really is a large hole. Some of the top views you can see water coming out of the side of the cavern wall. I imagine it is just some kind of sink whole.

This is a terrible disaster, see.

We need to:

1) Cordon off the entire area.
2) Say the place is dangerous.
3) Introduce all sorts of strange creatures in there.
4) Have people pay to go in and live their STALKER fantasies. Underground.

This happened (much smaller scale) at a parking lot of a supermarket in my town.

A woman was driving across and suddenly her car was like 6 feet down.

It was a broken pipe underground, basically it washed away like a 20 foot diameter, 8 foot deep mass of earth, the only thing holding up the parking lot was the asphault.

Well if you read the story in the provided site, it turns out there was a shaft there that got flooded. So yeh, the reason is very clear.
And yes, its a mining town.
