    Default The Teutonic Order

Haven't posted in here since the good old Rome days (god bless em)

First of all awesome work with this mod, love it!

Been playin SS 5.0 Late Era campagin with Teutonic Order.. or tryin

First round I get a ship and take my army to siege Visby, good for the trade and the only rebel city around. After a couple of rounds all hell breaks loose, first the bloody Danes try to take Visby, but ofc. with no luck, then Russia starts war with me and they are allies with Poland, so they start a war with me as well.

To me The Teutonic Order seems impossible to play, low on money and war on every front makes it hard to expand.

I started this thread to check around if any1 esle plays with The Teutonic order and if you do please don't be shy to post some good advise how to expand the "empire"

Well, start in the small, Dont take on poland and russia, its better to develop your nation, and expand North aginst norway and denmark instead. Then, when you get a good economy, destroy lithuania and poland, and you are almost there.

sounds like a good plan, but it's always Russia that starts the war with me and after that Poland joins them.... so I need to leave a army in my castle to defend it, that means one army less out in the field in the begining..
oh well.. I'll try to take a couple of regions in Sweden then move on..

In my Teutonic campaign, Denmark attacked me straight away but after their first attack I got a ceasefire from them. Then Novgorod did the same. I responded by taking Riga and their capital from them. Then Poland wanted a piece of me. The pope exommunicated them for doing so...so I declared open season on them. I took Thorn and Warsaw from them.

Riga is a good place to give your starting income a boost. But Novgorod will come down on you for doing so.

Actualy it is posible to defend castle 1:2. You only need a proper mix of troops. So defending is not a problem I think.

yeah, I got a good mix, 2 Order Spearmen, 2 Sword Brethren, 2 Prussian Archers, the swords for defending the wall, Order Spearmen at the both sides of the entrence, then I got my Prussian Archers in the back covering the entrence, and the nice thing with them is that they can plant stakes.. oh lord do they butcher.. last siege, one of the Prussian archer squads took out 204, just brilliant!

Yeah, playing the teutons on VH/VH, it's very hard indeed :x got freakin 4 factions against me, 2 of them super powers, within 10 rounds. Poland is just relentless now, and Denmark has the pope, so he freakin' hates me even though all I do is defend against them, haven't taken a single settlement from Poland or Denmark (though I have been known to sink Denmark's ships loaded with troopers. That's so fun ). Seems like all their war efforts, including Norway and Novgorod, is directed against me. Norway is pretty easy to fend off though, they usually send half-3/4 stack led by their king every 10 turns or so. I'm around turn 60, and managed to take Lithuenia's 2 starting provinces, Riga, Novgorod, Helsinki (that one was a nightmare, had half a stack of troops sieging Helsinki, not enough to win by attacking their walls, so I was just gonna starve them out, then Novgorod attacks me with another stack from behind.. after 3 reloads I managed to finally beat them :o. Reloading in that situation was fair imo since losing that battle would probably set me back 20 turns as I had next to no income), and the city south of Novgorod, can't remember the name, as well as Visby.
Anyway, now the Danish POS pope has called a crusade on my only ally, the HRE, if I fail to comply and send my faction leader against my only ally, he will excommunicate me and send an inquisition against me -_-. I'm hoping he will die soon, as he's 59 years old. 5~turns left until excommunication :<.

You're doing it wrong. Start pushing against Novgorod from the beginning, Take Novgorod, Riga and Helsinki (lol@historical accuarcy) for trade. Ally with Lithuania and Poland if possible, after you take the most important russian provinces, consolidate (ceasefire + trade rights, if possible) and proceed to crush Lithuania (they are easy). The Teutonic order is an excellent faction with good melee footmen, ranged units and superb cavalry. Oh, and I believe Burgher pikemen are some of the best in the game.

I decided to get crazy and do something a little out of the ordinary with The Teutonic Order. (VH/VH) On turn 1 I made 1 ship, packed all my men into that ship and headed for England. After dodging pirates for several turns, my troops arrived about turn 6-7 and landed next to Inverness. Many many years later I conquered all of england and ireland with the Teutonics. Not very historaical, but none the less very fun.

I followed Eirmar's advise and attacked Denmark for my expansion, allied with Norway then when I had the danes in my grip I backstabbed Norway and went in with full force, proper blitzkrieg When I was done with the Denmark and Norway, The Holy Empire went for me... I attacked Hamburg then went down with a crusading army for Nürnberg, after winning the battle of Nürnberg I gave it away to England and allied up with them (Norway is safe from invasion forces)

Now my forces are eager for the baltic which is their true purpose to bring down the pagans... Russia here I come!!

Well Visby is so loved you would think its the jerusalem of the north.

I took that little island as well with the teutonic order, my first conquest. Novgorod, Norway, Denmark and Poland have all tried to take it from me, so far they failed but its rather difficult to send in reinforcements to defend it with all the enemy fleets around. I can only train simple militia there at the moment.

In the meanwhile I almost eliminated Lithuania though. The problem is that their last city is eastwards and all my other enemies are more westwards. Its kind of stretching my armies further than they should.

Holler is right. Attack Novogrod immediately. They are weakly defended on their border and you can easily take down their 2 closest cities before they even know what hit them. Try attacking both cities same turn. After that it gets easy, with 3 cities behind you instead of 1 and a decent standing army, Denmark, Norway and Poland suddenly aren't so eager to take you on. There is also no danger of excommunication in attacking Russia, which keeps the pope on your side. He can make all the difference in the early stages.

I love Teutonic order, their units and starting position kick ass. You have to fight tooth and toenail in the beginning, and then comes the reward of Rutterbrauder and Burgher Pikemen. The makers of this mod have done an EXCELLENT job.

Hey guys, I started out with the Teutonic Order too.
Pretty tough especially with money bizznizz. How do you guys get the money to finance ya armies 'n stuff? It all really goes so slow ....

When I started out, Novgorod asked me to be it's vassal. I said "yes" since i would be safe from them.
So I attacked Denmark and Norway since someone posted here that it was a good idea.

And yeah, why the hell is Visby so popular?? Every surrounding faction wants it so badly. It's still in Teutonic hands though

To get back what I wanted to ask = how you guys finance ya armies??
Do ya blitzkrieg through east-europe and own the factions there?

Always nice to see yet another brother in the Order!

When I started my campagin I took Visby, and ofc. Denmark went into war against me. I allied up with Norway cause they were at war with Denmark as well, then I have to say yes to your question about blitzkreig.. do some hardcore blitz against the Danes to clear all the cities and castles in Sweden, then take their capital. After that I backstabbed Norway... I mean who needs em anyway!
Concentrate to build economic buldings such as farms etc. before you really expand the army. I turned to the Baltic after my twist against Denmark and Norway, really good for the trade if you have the coastal cities around the baltic.

lol, thanks ! but now i have to disappoint you....I started the game over with Holy Roman Empire.
And actually, it's going really good.

You gave some nice tips and advice though. I might start a new campaign as Teutonic Order. They're just so cool! Those helmets are awesome!

I just think its bit unfair they start only with 1 province.
