Default Heroic Victory - How bizarre ?

I am playing teutonic campaign with Novgorod and every time when i fight against lithuanian army consisting of e.g. 6 units crossbow units or 4-6 heavy infantry and i beat them with my army consisting of 1 general, 2 heavy cavalry and 7 horse archers, what is quite easy, i got as result:
    Heroic victory.
Even the balancy bar, be showed before the battle starts, it is always 70:30 for the enemy.
So what is this about ?
Why does the AI calculating probablities so inapropriate.

    Other question:
What is the benfit of reaching a heroic victory ????

Use autoresolve in that battle and then u will see why AI is calculating the way it does.

I have been playing battles like that and won, but when puting autoresolve, it is always lost battle.

If you are fighting with fammily member in youre army, he will gain traits like +2 or even +3 command or something like that.

And if not the captain might be "the man of the hour" = you get a good general for free.

But to answer your first question I think the AI counts the amount of units, not the quality, though I'm not sure. It might take the quality into account but what it doesn't take into account is that the Lithuanians don't have any spearmen or anything to guard their crossbowmen.

    That is so rare!!!!
As long as play TW games, it has happend to me only 2 times (both in RTW and that was when I was short of generals)!!!!

The AI does !!!! Cause often i am tripple time in superior number, and winning with condition results still in "heroic victory". This happens e.g. when i fought with 7 horse archers agianst two hellebardier units.
So the balance bar showed me before the battle that chance were 70/30 in favour for the enemy, so doing auto resolution of battle i would have lost .

    This is somehow strange.

Each unit has a certain auto-resolve value, the way I see it. It's why you can spam an army of nothing but Genoese Crossbows and autoresolve to victory, even though you couldn't actually win so easily in real battle.

The opposite is true for cheap horse archers. They have a very low value when it comes to calculating the odds of winning a battle with autoresolve. However, in the hands of a player who knows how to manage HAs to their absolute best, they are one of the more deadly and unevenly powerful units available.

Thus, you go into battle with the AI already calculating the odds are heavily against you, while we humans who know better see winning with a HA stack easy as pie.

    Archers win spears
    Spears win cavalry
    Cavalry win Archers

well those still all hold true, but cavalry archers kinda change that. the computer calculates the number of units AND the type. if u take say even 3 heavy cav. against 6 archers the calc odds will be very much in ur favour.

even if say 3 heavy cav. against 4 archers and 2 town militia the odds will prolly be pretty close to even. but 3 cav. against 4 or so pike units and the odds will prolly be in the AI's favour.

you also recieve a heroic victory when you have no casualties on your side or close to none given the size of the armies. e.g. 2 armies of 1500 men and you win with 5 casualties

Its a matter of the quantity of the troops vs. the quality. In your case, its the quality that prevails. Also, its kind of easy with the horse archers, because you can just keep skirmishing.
