    Default Too easy...

This mod is absolutly wonderful, but the Roman campaign is too easy. Why? I have too much income, my economy is exploding. The battles are outstanding and fantastic, but loosing a battle isn't very painful cause soldiers can be produced to fast and too effective without any problems.

So can I change something that the income is more balanced?

RS team, can you guys please put a FAQ thread or something?
proelium_committere, this question has been asked over and over again You might want to look up a thread with a better explanation. I can tell you the big idea though:

the way RS was made, you have a home region, that makes loads and loads of income. Once you get out of your home region, the regions don't make that much money anymore. And soon you get into a pattern: you need to recruit more and more legions to protect your territory or conquer other territories BUT the cities you conquer don't make up for that! Soon your unit upkeep gets higher and higher, and the cities don't compensate...
So what really happens is that the bigger your empire becomes, the less money you make (indirectly, because you are MAKING more money, but maintaining the empire costs too much).

The people here who play long campaigns, and who have a sizeable territory, often have an income of around 2000 denarii!!!!!

So don't let the start fool you. It'll be tough...

as i told one bloke, you try holding the Territory that Trajan had to deal with:
    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...Empire_117.svg

(plus germania magna, the bit between panonnia and dacia (the province's name in-game escapes me), and the crimea (bosphoran kindom on the map) if you're feeling lucky)

with all 35 legions + double (at least) the number of auxiliaries, plus city garrisons, plus forts, plus a navy, AND try and upgrade your cities. let us know how much money you're making then!

I would love to have a saved game from your campaign so I can see what's going going one. Would you be willing to upload it?

The one thing you don't mention is what campaign difficulty you are playing on as that can have a huge difference on how much money you have.

Okay, Pro, by now you may have read these responses and perhaps you’re wondering what the heck everyone is talking about? I mean, how can this mod be hard when you’re collecting 40,000 gold every turn, right? I know, because I’ve asked this question, back before I played more than a hundred turns into this mod.

May I explain, beginning with two assumptions:

    (1) In any empire, the people that are most loyal to you and most willing to contribute to the empire’s financial success are those who speak your language, worship your Gods, and believe in your divine right to rule; and

    (2) For this mod to have any validity, you will only create one each of the Counselor and Imperial Legions.

With that in mind, during the early days of the Republic, when you are raising Republican legions (i.e. Hastati, Principes, Velites), you will probably have an abundance of money. This is particularly true if you blitz like mad, taking all of the Italian peninsula, Sicily, Corsica, Sardinia, the other islands in the Mediterranean, Saloma, part of Greece, etc., all before 240 B.C.

Yes, if you follow this pattern of gameplay, you will have a great sense of accomplishment and buckets of money. Literally. You may be able to steam-roll right over the map. You will probably get bored and maybe even stop playing the mod, on the basis that it’s just so easy.

But recently, I tried an experiment and I encourage you to do the same before simply dismissing the mod as "too easy." Start a new campaign. Pick whatever battle setting you’re most comfortable with, and then set the campaign map at hard. Start playing. Limit yourself to the conquest of southern Italy and Sicily for the first forty years. Focus on defending yourself and building your cities. Limit yourself to six or seven full legions. If you’re really ambitious, go for Corsica and Sardinia, but go NO further.

Then, wait 30 to 40 years. Now take a stab at the "Northlands": Patavium, Segesta, etc. Maybe, if you’re feeling ambitious, take Saloma and a couple of the Free Cities to the Northeast.

Now, wait another 50 to 60 years. If Carthage hasn’t attacked you by now (and they probably will because you took Corsica and Sardinia), attack them. Try to sail an army over and take Carthage and north Africa. Meanwhile, defend yourself against the Gauls. And the Germans. And whoever owns Greece (Macedonia, the Greek Cities), etc. If you’re successful, and you probably will be, your empire will stretch from north Africa to Patavium to Saloma.

    Now, trigger the Marian reforms.

Remember: you can only raise one of each Legion and these legions are MUCH more expensive to raise and maintain. Once you have a few, you will find your extra cash drained. Moreover, you will find your empire attacked on all sides — by good Generals with well-equipped troops. Spies and Assassins will abound, and they will cause unrest in your cities, forcing you to lower the already low tax rate. Rebellions will start to occur, some minor, but many major. The buildings that you will need to build to maintain order will not be cheap. You will have maxed out the earning capacity of your Latin cities and you will have difficulty maintaining the peace long enough in your newly conquered territories to raise the taxes high enough to make them profitable. Your legions will be kept busy defending your borders and further conquest will be difficult to manage.

As if that’s not enough, if you followed the above timeline, then when you attack Gaul and Germany, you won’t be fighting armies of light spearmen and naked fanatics — you will be fighting armies of the best they have to offer: armored spearmen and elite Celtic warriors. Some of these units will cut through your legions like a scythe, if not by technical superiority, then by sheer numbers. You may be a great player and you may be able to defend your empire without (1) losing a legion or (2) losing a territory. If so, you’re much better than I am.

Now, if you do grow, you’ll find the distance from capital penalty to be significant enough, when combined with the general dissatisfaction of your new subjects who hate your religion, hate your government, and question your divine right to do anything, that you will not be able to set the taxes above the low setting.

I believe, if you do this, you find the game quite challenging. In fact, I intend to prove this with my next AAR, as soon as the new hotfix is done. But I invite you to try this in the meantime.

Also, Squid is right: your setting has a lot to do with how difficult this mod is and how enjoyable it will be for you.

Perhaps a screenshot of your empire and/or some of those comparison graphs could help us determine why you are finding it so easy, other then the many reasons listed above.

Indeed, everyone's right. I have tried a more historically accurate campaign as the romans and a "blitzkrieg" campaign. Playing an accurate campaign is a royal pain and makes you wonder how Roma did it for so long. The blitz campaign is easier to start, but eventually things will start to slow down and grind a bit. I currently am caught in consistent pitched battles with Armenia and the remnants of the Germanic tribes who dominate the far north and far east-northeast sides of the map, respectively.

    My campaign has reached 271BC.

I have only conquered Croton, Cannae, Bonnonia and Mediolanium. I haven't plucked up the courage to start a war with Epirus for Tarentum yet. Pyrrhus has a very scary looking army.

There is no way this mod is too easy. It seems just right. I am getting a lot of income, but from the comments above. It seems that it would be wise to build up a warchest for when money becomes tight.

Right you are. I have two legions camped outside his territory. I think it's time to have a bash at the little greek fella. I'm looking forward to seeing the elephants in action in this mod.

Just as long as they dont stomp my army too bad. I have a feeling this won't be a cakewalk.

Once I have all of southern Italy. I shal head north and take the rest of Gallia Togata.

then where next? Sicily? Or maybe cross the Adriatic and gain a foothold in Epirus? We shall see. I feel a 1st Punic war coming on.

I lost a whole legion to pyrrhus but it was definately worth it.
"So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night. So, Jeff Beck pops his head 'round the door, and mentions there's a little sweets shop on the edge of town. So - we go. And - it's closed. So there's me, and Keith Moon, and David Crosby, breaking into that little sweets shop, eh. Well, instead of a guard dog, they've got this bloody great big Bengal tiger. I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace, but the shopowner and his son... that's a different story altogether. I had to beat them to death with their own shoes. Nasty business, really. But, sure enough, I got the M&Ms, and Ozzy went on stage and did a great show."

King Pyhrrus has unfortunately had a slight mishap with a bunch of spears. So we won't be seeing him or his elephants again any time soon. Poor chap!

The Elephant charge was quite easliy dealt with. I managed to lure the elephants in to chasing my right flank cavalry, where my velites added to the hail of pila fire thrown by the hastati and princips maniples of my right flank.

This seemed to have no efffect other than to attract the elephants attention, who then ignored my cavalry and crashed into the right flank of my line. Unfortunately for the elephants, they got bogged down and couldn't mantain their momentum and soon died upon the spears of the Triarii without causing too much damage to my army.

Battle was won, with aroung 4300 epirot casualties to the Romans 1900.

I have to say again, great mod. Battles are sooo much better. In Vanilla I would have won that encounter with 190 casualties instead of 1900. In fact, if I was playing vanilla, it would be very unlikely that I would have had a battle of this scale at all.
