Any reggae fans on the boards?

I say reggae, but feel free to discuss any Jamaican music in here.

Who are your favorite artists, what are your favorite genres, and do you have any recommended listening (both songs and whole albums)?

Personally I'm fond of the Wailers (all ages - their early ska is just as great as their later roots); Dennis Brown; Black Uhuru; Steel Pulse; Lee Perry & The Upsetters; Junior Murvin; the Skatalites..

A few great songs with Jamaican influences:

Model, by Simply Red (I just love it!)
    Revolution Rock, by the Clash
Their cover of Police and Thieves is pretty nice too..
    Guns of Brixton..
There's a few Joe Walsh songs with a nice reggae influence.

Then I weighed him I said, “Holy ****!” because he weighs 900,000,000,000,000,000 tons. That amazing weight made me say the “S” word.

    It's all about the Reggae.
You need to hear Desmond Dekker, Jimmy Cliff, Toots and the Maytals plus loads who only had one or two songs. Buy the album, or better the film, The Harder They Come

Yeah, I've been wanting to see that for ages.
I had most of the soundtrack on my old pc, but alas, no more.
    The title song's great though.

From what little I've heard, I don't like Toots that much.. dunno why.

Dekker, I had a few songs of, but again this was on my English PC.

Peter Tosh's version of Johnny B Goode is awesome (great performer, some really good live clips of him on Youtube)

If you want an easy way to get into dub and reggae, Trojan Records has some really, really good 3 disc compilations out, some of them are pretty cheap too.

I used to be somewhat of a reggae fan when I was in my "smoking weed is cool" period. I remember, yes I still remember stuff, having a record of a artist called Jellowman. He was an albino who made some wicked songs. I, in a momentary laps of reason, got rid of all my old vinyl and donated them to some sale.

Does anyone know if there happen to cd's of Yellowman out there? I'll google it later myself but info is welkom.

I like Dub a bit more than straight Reggae and its Ska variants. It seems a little more 'relaxing', plus the effects seem to create more of a fade-out laid back feel. This is mostly from my listening to Thievery, and various remixes of Marley and Dekker's work.

Don't get me wrong I love the roots. Roots of any music (blues, jazz, soul, funk, reggae) are great, but it's fascinating to see where new artists are taking the genres.

Post-Marley, reggae has lost all it's energy. Compare:

It just comes down to personal taste really now doesn't it? I just like the vibe it's going to.
