I am Legend
I just finished reading this yesterday. By far one of the best books I've read in a long time, and I strongly suggest anyone to try it - particularly with the Will Smith film adaptation coming out in December.
For those not in the know, I am Legend by Richard Matherson tells the story of a post-War plague hitting the then future of 1976. Vast swathes of the population are wiped out, the rest becoming Vampires. All but Robert Neville. Neville is forced to fortify his house against the monsters at night, and hunt them by day. Neville eventually begins to research the virus, desperately trying to find a cure, even more so attempting to stave off his growing insanity.
As a book, it is superbly written - Neville's slow adaptation to life as the last man on earth is a work of art; on the outset, Neville is a drunken, sexually frustrated shell. The vampire's constant taunting slowly eats at his mind, driving him further and further into depression. Gradually however, he begins to harden - his burning desire to find a cure drives him into a constant work cycle, while his daily killings of the Vampires ultimately determines his eventual fate.
Overall, the book is a timeless classic in my eyes. You never get a feeling that the book wouldn't fit into a modern setting - in fact, the production of the aforementioned movie proves this.
