I recommend the best rig you can reasonably afford.
Personally, I play on a 3-year old P4 3.2 GHz box with 2 Gigs of RAM and NVidea 6800 XT, running Vista. In TIC, there is no lag whatsoever on the strategy map. Battles are another story, though. The new unit models are a lot more detailed compared to those in vanilla/BI. They look very nice, but the extra detail causes lower frame rate in battles, if you zoom in close. So, plan accordingly. I'd say NVidea 6xxx series is the minimum, 7xxx for mid-range system, 8xxx series if you can afford it.
ps: I'm not a big fan of ATI cards, but whatever the equivalent ones are, would do just as well.

What level was your unit details set to(high?) and what unit size were you using?
Here is my rig:
Intel Duo core 6700 OC to 2.93 ghz
2gig ram
MSI 8800 ultra.
I just upgraded my card from 7950 gx2. It lags to 6-8 fps at 20,000 men. And its still playable. Once I upgraded to 8800 ultra It only went up to 12-14 frames. RTW is a cpu hog. So I recommended atleast a duo core or equivalent. The video card is more on the quality of the textures and maps. The CPU is the one that processes each soldiers on the field. So I would invest in a good CPU.

You aren't going to have very many battles with 20,000 men, even on huge. Max unit size on huge is 240 men x 20 units per stack = 4800 men per stack. Playing a campaign game, 99% of the time, you wouldn't even hit 10,000. Just about the only time I can imagine 20,000 soldiers on the field is in multiplayer with 4 or more players.
A faster CPU and/or more memory will make the game load faster, but it won't help with the frame rate nearly as much as a better video card. In RTR VII and TIC, there will be tons of new high-quality textures, so buy a good video card before you worry about the CPU.

The objects on the screen are processed by the cpu. Then the gpu adds the quality of the texture, resolutions, anti-aliasing etc. Both are important. You can get a intel duo core 6400 for around 200 bucks. Add that to a geforce 7 series card and you should have enough power. Also duo core cpus are very overclock friendly.

Loading time is influence most by your HDD.
CPU is similar to Graphics cards in video games... some things require more of one then the other. In general though... RTW uses stuff all CPU and M2tw uses a bit.
So as house of ham said... upgrade your graphics card. Even if you've got every setting up to the max and your max resoulution... put in 4x AA and 4X AF! It makes things look so much more detailed.
Also you may have 10,000 units in MP... although that's a 2vs2 team! 20,000 however.... probably not going to happen too often.
Thanks everyone for your input. With the holidays around the corner it may be a good time to upgrade.![]()
Yah and if you have enough mula the new Geforce 9 series is suppose to come out in a couple of weeks. I heards its 2x power of the 8800 ultra but it uses the new PCI express 2.0. I think it will need a new motherboard. Dam I just bought my 8800 ultra last week. I should've waited for a month before I decided. Its always like that. Just when you buy a top of the line product its goes obselete in a few months.

I run 3.1GHz, GeForce 5200FX, and 512MB RAM.
With a lot of tweaking, I can get -playable- frames per second. I usually have all settings low, grass the one right before lowest, and like medium vegetation.
I hope that will suffice for RTRVII. :S
That should be more than enough with low settings. And RTR 7.0 is not going to have 240 men per unit. But you might not see the beautiful colors and details of the units with low settings.

I'm playing with a GF MX 4 so the specs are pretty low.....
But I am looking into getting a 4 core computer with 8800![]()
Since its just a proposal. You should wait until the geforce 9 series comes out sometime in November.
