Metallica!!!!!!!!

The baddest band alive, but they fell off after their black album. Metallica's guitar is just so good, there's none better, especially not in Heavy Metal. I even like their softer songs, almost everything thing they touched used to be gold. Why would they sell out? And even when they first did the black album wasn't all that bad, what happened to them being at least decent after the sell out? BTW, check out the album on I-Tunes, Metallica S&M, it's Metallica and the San Francisco Orchestra (yes, a f'n orchestra!) playing all of their best songs.

Metallica , why did james have to change his voice and why does lars suck so much (not in drums). kill em all thru and justice for all, they kicked ass. i blame the black album for the change. they tried to appeal to the masses and they did, though after the black album they sucked and kept sucking. after watching some kind of monster it just showed that they are a bunch of wussies. hopefully theyre new album doesnt suck like st. anger. i bought that when it first came out and i wept for them. i would like to add kirk can't shred like he used to, in fact after listening to all the good albums, all his solos sound the same, the same pentatonic licks. he's not that good tbh. sure he had some awesome solos (ride the lighning, one, master of puppets) but a lot of them do suck, he covers his mistakes with the gay wah pedal.

Metallica are one of the most overrated bands on the planet, for what they have done.

I prefer Judas Priest but that's just me.

Metallica is not what it once was.
They're getting old too.

From a purely Metal perspective, their only serious albums were Kill 'em All, Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets.

Metallica were Thrash Metal (or at least so until their 4th album). They have nothing to do with the Heavy Metal genre or NWOBHM.

But since you've mentioned it, there are NUMEROUS Thrash Metal bands that surpass Metallica in all areas of Thrash - technicality, speed, aggression, soloing, riffing and everything else in between. Here are three of those bands:

Sodom
Kreator
Exodus
Slayer
Nuclear Assault
Vio-lence

I've seen the orchestra video and that was a good performance.

You have to understand Metallica's position. Back in the late 80's, previously serious Thrash bands like Megadeth and Slayer started to commercialize by making their sound more accessible for the not-so-serious Metalhead. Metallica's fall into that category was inevitable in such a situation but the difference is that while Slayer, Megadeth, Overkill, Anthrax, Testament, etc truly suck now, Metallica just went emo.

Megadeth's tombstone was Countdown to Exstinction. I respectfully disagree on Slayer. Although neither of their last albums is close to South of Heaven and, even, Season in the Abyss, they fared better than most of the others. Kreator being a fortunate exception. Oh, Annihilator too. And changing Ulrich's unique drums sound to death metal drums sound was a disaster, as long as you're not playing death. Same with Hetfield's vocals, which went from very good to "wtf is this?"
Metallica and Megadeth should've learn from Pantera. Reinventing the Steel was their weakest album, after that they decided they had nothing left and broke up. Another good example (not metal band, though) was Soundgarden. Down to the Upside was a masterpiece and a swan song.

After seeing "Some kind of monster" I realised that this man has no taste in Metal music.
Some of the crap that Metallica created in movie was simply horrible and what is worse is this guy telling them how good it sounds.
Even Lars's dad had better taste then him and he's a tennis playing hippy.
Hopefully the new producer will point them in the right direction.

Indeed.
However I must admit that St Anger in all it's crappiness was better then Load and Reload.
Only thing decent they did recently was the Garage Inc album and those wasn't even their own songs.

Who are Metallica? I've never heard of them... What songs of theirs should I download first as a good example of their music?

Nah, I was joking, although admittedly it wasn't very funny.
I'm a pretty big Metallica fan, and have been for about 15 years now. Great band, and I'm very hopeful that there next album will make up for the shame of St.Anger.

I like some old Metallica every now and again, but I prefer Shadows Fall over them now for their pure metal and even acoustical stuff.

megadeth is still kickn ass, even though they arent has fast or heavy 15 yrs ago. i bought united abominations and its a really good cd, listen to sleep walker. its got a lot of rust in pecae in it. dave mustaine for president, haha!
slayer lost their magic after seasons of the abyss. i hate their new stuff. tom araya lost his awesome metal voice, now he justs screams into the mic.
@sextus - nice list, nuclear assault, vio-lence and exodus are awesome thrash bands. you forgot to mention testamnet, coroner and overkill

USE to be great, I think Ride the Lightning and MOP are two of the best albums released in past 25 years. The band itself ceased to exist after And Justice for All. Black, Load, Reload and especially St Anger are complete and utter crap...musical growth/progression is fine and absolutely necessary but attempting to be something you arent is just stupid. Its funny that I think Mustaine proved HE was far better equipped/talented to shift to a more commercial sound than Lars/James were. Of course Slayer rules all.

Can't stand Metallica >_>

They ooze generic metal dullness for me... no real depth or doing anything particularly inspiring. But that's just me
