Yup, I actually don't hate the United Nations.
Do I think they have problems? Absolutely. I'm not saying that it's a perfect organization. There are a lot of glaring problems with it, especially when it comes to peacekeeping operations. It was also designed when the only self-governing African representatives were Liberia, Egypt, and South Africa. Now there are dozens of unstable African nations, and each of them has a vote. Do I think they're corrupt? Yes, there's a lot of corruption there, and it must be rectified. I think the whole "Oil for Food" scandal was overplayed by the American media. Of course we all know that the US government never has episodes of corruption.![]()
However, I do believe in the UN's purpose. I even tried to work for them (in the security field), but all their positions require lots of previous experience. I'd much rather work for them than for, say, the US government. This isn't an insult, you understand. Individual governments do what they were meant to do, but I just happen to think that the UN has a somewhat higher calling.
Fox Noise will spend hours bashing the UN (the way they shriek and holler about it, you'd think black helicopters were landing in our backyards), but I think a lot of it comes from the fact that the UN is actually very effective in some aspects. They've got land mine clearance programs in dozens of countries, which are quite successful. There are also many more UN-run programs that meet with varying degrees of success. All in all, it's a pretty damn good organization that just needs to be retooled.
