Default Exploding ammo or not? (Canons)

So what should I use with my Basilisks?

I have noticed that normal ammo can go through many ranks at once. In my Americas campaign, as the Spanish, my canons would fire using normal ammo, and would cut vast lines in the enemies ranks. However, is there any special effects of using exploding ammo? I know it kills all in a certain radius, but I cannot see a use for it - I even heard it's less accurate!

Its best used with a large battery and against a large tightly packed foe (like a crusading army). 2+ cannon units firing explosive shot into a full stack arranged in 3 lines will cause mass casualties and drop moral like crazy. If you only have a single cannon unit then the explosive shot is rather useless. Its too inaccurate to have the desired effect, so I stick to regular shot you'll have more success that way.

This is true, it becomes less accurate when using the special ammunition. For this reason it is best to have a couple pieces of artillery when using flaming projectiles, or your chances of hitting anything worthwhile is far too low to make this a feasible tactic.

But always chuck the cows, regardless, because it never stops being funny.
