    Default A Little Seleucid Help

Hullo, I just started A Seleucid campaign on H/VH in vanilla, it's going pretty well so far. I've got alliances with Greece & Pontus and trade rights with Armenia and Parthia and so far no one seems to want to come south. I've been working my way south through the Egyptians surprisingly easily and am already the largest faction. My infrastucture is coming along nicely and I'm making good money. I'm going to need temples pretty soon and I was wondering if I need to build a certain one for elite units? Do the Seleucids even have elite units?

No, TSE have no elite units that are available from Temples. I recommend simply builing Law, Experience and Trade temples.

Anytime. TSE have elite units in the form of Armoured Elephants, Companions and Silver Shields, (both kinds) but all from conventional buildings.

Oh yeah. Scythed chariots are available from blacksmiths, but you probably already knew that.

one problem with those guys are they are totally useless when your in the battle map, however they are pretty useful in quelling those hard to reach rebels by auto resolve

(Its clickable by the way....An S2 overhaul mod.)

Seriously. Click it. Its the only overhaul mod that's overhauling enough to bring out NEW clans

I'm about halfway through a Seleucid game, just now at war with the Brutii and marching into Greece across the channel and out of Scythia. I own the Black Sea. But in the beginning I had life and death struggles with Egypt that killed off most of the first generation of my dynasty. I found it absolutely necessary to go shopping in the desert for bedouin camel archers and cavalry. Though money was scarce, the investment was really worth it. Later I used the same strategy marching through Asia, picking up many, many mercenary horse archers and chargers.

Don't neglect your northern borders. Armenia, Pontus and Parthia will all come knocking at your gates eventually. The Armenians in particular have some kind of weird fetish for Hatra.

The Seleucids have by far the most diverse troop selection compared with all the other factions. as for infantry, train bulks of Phalanx pikmen. ignore silver sheild pikemen as they're rather expensive in recruitiment cost and upkeep. ignore all sort of missile troops. a couple of onagers will do. the cavalry is the tasty bit, use Cataphracts as shook cavalry. these guys will slughter any other cavalry that they face. Companion cavalry should be used as a mobile unit to cut down enemy missile troops first and then attack the enemy infantry from the rare. Companion cavalry are probably more useful than cataphracts since they can actually run and has enough stamina to last the whole battle.

The first few decades of the Seleucid campaign will be pretty hard for anyone who hasn't played this campaign. my advice is to make alliance with Pontus. they will accept and leave you alone for a while. In my campaign Parthia didn't attack Seleucia until I finished Egypt off. this really helped as with the economy and troops the Seleucid had to start with was really bad. first concetrated on Egypt. train elephant in masses and then head down from Antioch to Sidon and Jerusalame. train militia hoplite instead of other sort of pikemen. you don't have the money to train and mantain them at the moment. hit Egypt with all you got. enslave every city and make sure the population goes all to Antioch. the city doesn't grow much once you set the tax to very high. the Egyptian will gave a tough fight but a superior genearal shouldn't find trouble dealing with it. after the fall of Egypt split your army into 2 teams. each team consititing 2 armys. one head for Armenia and the other heading for Susa. aviod open battles as the anooying horse archers and can cause havoc when gaving the space to run around. confine their armys in cities and roll your Phalanx troops and elephants in there. take their settlements quickly and finished off Pontus before they become a major power. now all your rivals in Aisa are gone. your economy should be booming (hopeful). concentrate in specific cities in producing your elite troops. after gathering a sizeble army then head into the Balkans and eventually Italy. good luck!
