    Default Stakes - Longbowmen

    Hello,
I have asked, searched and even wrote pm's to people directly who came up with some very helpfull discoveries on this topic.

As I have never gotten any answers nor found solutions, I had to post another thread.

In the "Hints and Tricks" forum people talk about being able to place an infinite number of stakes for their Longbowmen. They are evn saying that you can make all kinds of contrabtions out of these things. They way to do it is, place the stakes, than move unit and place some more stakes.......

But I am only able to place stakes once!!! How come.

I am playing MTWII and Kingdoms wihtout any mods. Is the reason for not being able to do this, because this bug was fixed in kingdoms.

What can I do?? Un-install Kingdoms and MTWII and than only re-install MTWII???

    Please help!!!

Hmmm, well I too play vanilla and have played with all patches and Kingdoms, and never seen anything like this. I think this possibly could be some form of exploit or bug.

A skill like that seems a little overpowering, so I cant imagine it being included in any mods.
    I love you all!

I got this from the "Share your Tricks and Shortcuts" Forum.

(Sorry if I'm outdated and everyone already knew this)

To get hundreds of hundreds of stakes placed before battle, you can place stakes an infinite amount of times, not just once, then move your units that placed them anywhere you want in deployment and the stakes will still be there...

take the stake unit, and decide where to place the stakes, then press = or - continuously with the F key(special ability).

you'll have thousands of stakes placed, and then you can build all kinds of contraptions and fortresses out of your stakes, move your unit to where you want the stakes placed again, and then do the samr thing - or = back and forth with the F key.

I tried to contact him directly, but it seems you can't send himany direct messages! But others have talked about as well...... I believe this is a bug, but a quite cool one, if you just want to play around in the game!

By the way "Captain Spanky", are you any good in modding the game????
Maybe you would be able to help me a bit on another topic?????

I already answered your first question in another thread lol, but feel free to ask me anything. While I dont know a lot of about modding and editing things, I do have a fair amount of knowledge in other areas.

This is just a simple question about modding.

I have just downloaded the "Conquerable Unit" Mod. Great mod, let's you play certain units from other factions which you conquered.

Anyway, as I have no idea what I am doing in those data files (the last tries resulted in having to re-install 3 times lol). So I have the mod and unfortunately it does not implement itself! lol

So, would you be able to tell me what I have to do with those files and where to implement them???

Erm, I am afraid that is well above my head. You really need to talk to somebody who uses mods on a regular basis to sort that out. Sorry I couldnt be of more help.

Wait, I think I know how:

In the battle deployment screen, use the Longbow special ability. It should create Stakes.

Well, just tested it and it does work.
Do like this, if you want to cheat this way
Hold down the [-] buttom and press F, you will need to quickly move your unit away from the location or it won't work. At all time keep the - buttom pressed.

They cause more trouble than they're worth in my view. You lay them down, start the battle and when some of your horses run away, sometimes the retards just run themselves into the stakes!

Thanks a lot guys. I will have to test that later. I probably did not keep pressing the(-) key. So thanks for helping me out here.

I really do like the fact that you can place stakes. It makes the battle field look more historicall correct and really cool, as they used them quite a lot, even the Romans did that.

Right... I have tried it and it is not the (-) key nor the (=) key.
It is pressing the (F) key all the time, than finally I got it to work, even though I still have problems placing them were I want them.

After my first test battles, clustering the place with stakes, I have noticed that once you put too many in a certain area they seem to cancel each other out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I did this:

    Enemy (Heavy Mongol Cavalary!)
    EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx 1. Line of Stakes (Cheat Cluster)

xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx 2. Line of Stakes (Normal Stakes)
    MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
    My Forces (Retinue Longbows)

Well, a whole army of Mongol Cavalary charged at my few Longbowmen, I was waiting for a huge massacre as they didn't even try to go around the stakes!!! They went through the first stake defence line "without anybody being killed". ?????????????????? They went through the stakes like infantry. After cursing the game, they approchaed my second stake line, which was only minorly defended (Stake Ratio 1:10 compared to the frist line)
Only this thin and normal second defencive line actually killed 90% of them...

Now, how the h*** is this possible???

    Anybody else experience this???

I am not sure it is an exploit as it doesn't really work!

hehe, but I bet you felt safe when they charged until they charged through so at least you(r troops) had a psychological bonus even if it only lasted until impact

Well, didn't feel any thing as I did do test battles on single player mode. So no risk and no fun!!!!!! :-)
But I was actually really surprised when they all were going through the stakes unharmed.

Did you use Stake Tactics before?? What is your experience?? Maybe placing them like below would be much better, than just going completly mad and staking everything!

xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx Stakes
xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx

usually one line of stakes is enough, you can move around them if the enemy cav changes its charge route.

the more stakes thing is buggy at best as it is well a bug. the main stakes seem to be the last ones you place in any case.

    archers
    xxxxxxxxxxx
    infantry x infantry

use archers as a bait and as soon as the cav charges you counter charge and/or flank with your infantry while taking back the archers, requires some timing and practice to make it work though.

You said it Samir.... the stake thing is a bug and placing too many is even buggier!!!!

I placed so many stakes that by the look of it there wasn't even space for infantry to walk past the stakes :-)

Anyway as it is buggy and really doesn't work as other are saying, I am not sure if is really an exploit anymore after what I have experienced.

But maybe I did over do it a bit! :-)

I think if you place them a little bit away of each other it works better, stakes that are over each other seem to neutralize each other again.

Used this feature (deploying stakes) for the first time last night. But during the battle got all confused and sent my generals unit back onto these stakes by mistake

Seem quite effective if used correctly but must admit I don't use the cheats or the mods.
