    Default Island City States.

I've been wondering what the best faction would be for turtling on an island, or in some remote place one can make Venice look like a small, defenseless village, and unconventional or at least original ways to make that money pile grow without resorting to capturing settlements.

What do people think? I'm not worried about it being slow, I just want to see if it's possible. Hiding in my little fortress city or citadel and enforcing my will through overwhelming and brief attacks rather than through massive armies.

I'd imagine landing a raiding party near Marseille, exterminating the populace and letting it rebel is a swifter way to put a monkey wrench in any possible conflict between an Italian state and say, France, than twitting around with the diplomacy in M2.
Personally, I'd prefer seeing seeing a Byzantine Empire in the 1600s, and further. Realism? ha! The glory of crushing Rome's enemies comes before questions on why you have greeks with guns running around the Middle East and beyond.

Play Sicily. Change Palermo in to a city and change Naples in to a castle (or let it rebel). Earn the money with Palermo. You have now a location to meddle around in the affairs of other factions.
Officer to a soldier who refuses to fight: There three types of soldiers who don't have to fight. They are called KIA, MIA and POW and you are not one of them.

    Tosa will be missed.

Would Palma be a more appropriate location or not? Still easy to reach as Sicily. (Playing SS 5.0*.)
