    Default Saint and Greavsie Thread

Thought I'd better start a thread to talk about your memories from the glorious world of football. All nations please.

    Who are you favourite players?

Which players do you think are overated?

Which season was your high point and which season should be wiped from the history books?

Which players make you shed a nostalgic tear ?

You can talk about anything but I would prefer it to be more than a few seasons old ( unless you want to compare it to nowadays players or teams )

    Pictures and Videos are encouraged.

I shall start with my favourite footballing image (tough choice between this one and Psycho punching the air )

Good thread... . I won't feel so guilty now .

Terry Butcher, wow, so much blood. The sort of bloke you want in the trenches with you.

Favourite players. Peter Beardsley. 'Sir' Les Ferdinand. Nolberto Solano, another gent & always gives 110%, also Peruvian(see below). Tino Asprilla (so unpredictable, brilliant on his day. Also saw him turn round & head butt a defender in an UEFA cup match & totally get away with it.) Gary Lineker (for scoring against Germany in Italia 90). Bobby Moore (football gentleman & 'ahem..1966)

Overrated Players: Frank Lampard. Peter Cech. Paul Robinson (terrible keeper) Darren Bent (16.5 million! FFS)

Season High 1992-1993. Newcastle absolutely crushed Divison 1. Winning the first 11 games playing exciting attacking football & ended the season as champions with a televised 7-1 demolition of Leicester City.

Season Low 1995-1996. 12 points ahead at Christmas in the Premiership, still playing attacking football, only to blow it & be pipped by Man U at the end. Curse you Cantona!!!!

Nostalgia: Any old footage from World Cups or European games from the 70's & before. I don't shed a tear just makes me remember simpler, happier times.

Almost forgot to say one of my happiest memories. 1978 World Cup. England under the lamentable Don Revie didn't qualify but Scotland did and didn't they let us know about that. So it was with the greatest pleasure that I watched massive underdogs Peru rip them to shreds & win 3-1. With some great long range goals. Cubillas!!!!!!!!!

Hated Don Revie with a passion . His Leeds boys upset Cloughie when he was there. Side note- I have meet Nigel Clough - Great bloke nothings too much for the small bloke on the street (unless theres a game on he's get a big blue gob when he's on the sidelines )

I love watching Stanley Matthews and Tom Finney ,superb players.

I think Cantona had that effect on most non-united fans. Great player though. I remember vaguely 1995-96 season (year we got knocked out of the Cup-Winners cup by Feyenoord ) . You were superb that season shame the following 2 seasons didn't get any better for you. Christian Gross

Sorry I seemed to have listed all modern players in the overrated bit. It's difficult to remember past players who were supposed to be great but weren't (I'm sure someone will correct me on this ) + they tend to fade into the background rather quickly.

Lampard shines (shone?) in the Chelsea team because he has world class players to create space\chances for him whereas his limitations are cruelly exposed in the England set-up. What a difference Gareth Barry has made to the England team.

First I would like to make a public apology to Harry Lime by implying that he was a Spurs fan. I hope he isn't too insulted.

I agree with your views on Barry. He has totally surprised me. I never rated him previously especially when he played on the left for England. No Pace and no real ability to carry the ball. He has been a revelation in the middle. Keeps the ball well and passes short but effectively.

I couldn't of put it better myself about Lumps. He scores a lot of goals but that is down to positional awareness not due to any great skill. Even Barry Horne would struggle not to score in a line up which included Essien,SWP,Joe Cole etc.

We can't accomodate him so why try. Leave him on the bench, better still drop him for Nolan or Barton. Much better overall players IMO

Just for the hell of it I will post some of my favourite non-everton players

    Ian Ormondroyd
    Barry Venison
Bryan Robson (my oldest son is named after him)
    Eric Cantona
    Paul McGrath
    Robert Lee
    Ricky Villa
    and Jurgen Klinnsmann

I was going to say Ginola and Gascoigne but I somehow forget that they graced Goodison Park (in some shape or form )

No need for the apology. I don't mind Tottenham really (perennial under-achievers like us) it's just Gross I can't stand. The man was a joke from day one.

Ian Ormondroyd : He was a striker wasn't he? Can't remember who he played for, was it Forest?
Barry Venison: Ended his career at Newcastle. Did a good job for us but I always thought he was one of he players that represented Liverpool's decline as the major football power.
Bryan Robson: Best midfielder of his generation. So unlucky with injuries.
Eric Cantona: A great player but I still curse him!!!
Paul McGrath: Solid defender of the 'old school'. Dodgy knees.
Robert Lee: Another Newcastle hero. Always gave his all & capable of some great goals.
Ricky Villa: Best FA Cup goal ever. Pure magic. See Spurs fans I don't hate you
and Jurgen Klinnsmann: Sorry have to disagree with you on this one. Good striker but the diving was shameful. Gerd Muller was the best German striker. He'd be worth about 60 million today.

That is a travesty mate, and I cant believe you said that. Lamps is one of he best midfield operators in the world and those poeple that are booing him should have their vocal cords violently ripped out with a pair of rusty pliars. No one, I mean, no one in the England set up deserves to be treated like that. He's had a hard time at internaional level for the last year or so but doensnt deserve the boos. What has he done to deserve boos anyway, can you sepcifially identify a point in time that Lampard has deserved to booed? Other than he penalty miss against portugal, becasue if we're going that way then Gerrard should be booed too.

    In answer to the thread:

Osgood. What a player, apparently. Never saw him in action but wouldve like to as well as Kerry Dixon, and Bobby Tambling.

Overrated: Nani, that boy is rubbish. El hadji Diouf, Probably my most hated player of all time. Not one MOTD has gone by in the last 5 years where Diouf hasnt been penalised for doing something idiotic, like spitting or diving or a rash tackle. He should be sacked.

No he is a joke when he puts on the 3 lions. He waddles about with very little effort. If you watch him closely all he does is put his arms up waiting for the ball and when he does get it he either does one of the two following things

    1 He loses the ball
2 The ball ends up in row z.

I admit the crowd shouldn't boo him (although Phil deserves it ,he's shocking ) but the crowd should show their disgust on his inclusion.

Osgood was a superb player ,clever and strong. Also a nice gentlemen. One of the few pundits I used to take notice of. Kerry was also a great player ,didn't look like he was doing much on the pitch but he was a great goal scorer. Shame about the hair though

@Harry Lime I agree it was mind boggling when Rafa took off Gerrard. He was all over the place and he run our midfield ragged. The ref was an absolute joke. I don't want to talk about it

It's very hard to find a good referee these days, the standard is shocking & it's entirely down to the FA.
My own pet hate as far as refs go is Steve Bennett who seems to delight in sending off Newcastle players or not awarding us blatant pens. I was moaning about him as usual to a mate at work who used to be a lower league ref (Conference etc.) & he said the reason why refs like Bennett get promoted to the Premiership is because they follow the letter of the law exactly. Any ref who uses commonsense on the pitch is doing his career prospects no good at all.

I mean did you see the Villa-Man U game? Did Reo-Coker really deserve to be sent off? & it was definitely a pen but to send the Villa keeper off as well was very harsh.

Yeah same here, but I do quite like 1982 World Cup as well, especially Maradona getting sent off in the second round.

    @Paggers

Ron Greenwood succeeded Don Revie. It was Revie who masterfully undermined our World Cup Qualification attempt.

Sorry I didn't post at the weekend. I was too depressed by Newcastle's abject display at Reading. Just when you think things are getting better with the Magpies along comes a result like that. Guess it'll take Big Sam a long time to sort us out.

Well done to Everton who did what we failed to do, that is win at Pride Park.

The title race is shaping up to be between Arsenal & Man Utd. So this weekend's game should be interesting.

Aye, very true, I had forgotten that Greenwood took over part way through the qualification.

I think big Sam will sort out your travelling blues, so don't worry too much.
It may just be that you have to go all out in the first 15 minutes to try and score and then defend it for the rest of the game. You can always counterattack with Oba Martins as that boy is so quick it's scary.

I think we see the lads from yesteryear as men who played out of passion for the game and showed loyalty to their clubs. Players today are more like overpayed mercenaries so its harder to relate to them. That and they're all diving bastards, with the odd exception.

My condolences to you my brother Kid Dynamite. It sounded like you were harshly done in the derby game but perhaps the result could have been worse if Benitez hadn't made some truly bizarre tactical decisions.

Sad to see Celtic lose too Rob but 3-0 seems like it was quite conclusive. At least you're still top!

You're only saying that becasue you're a Chelsea fan. I'm pretty sure a lot of neutrals agree that he has some talent. He's been playing fairly well and showing some promise.

    As for the thread,

Favourite players: Cruijff, Pele, Maradona, Cantona, Boniek, di Stefano, Garrincha, Socrates, Stoichkov, van Basten, Koeman, Keano, and of course ZICO! I wish I was alive to see the greatest Brazilian era with Pele in the team. I've to settle for replays.

Favourite players of today: Ronaldinho, Tevez, Giggs, Scholes, and LIONEL MESSI (the messiah!)!!

Of course there are quite a few that I've left out.l

I'm not old enough for any nostalgic moments yet, though from time to time, I like to watch the Trebble winning Man Utd Team, and the Dream Team of Barcelona when Cruijff was coach.

Zico was a great player ,he seemed to glide across the pitch. I hate Koeman (being an England fan I'm supposed to ) however ,slow and arrogant. Could whack the ball though.

Don't really have favourite seasons and seasons to forget, just particular fixtures.
Favourite fixture 26th May 1989, away at Anfield, pretty self explanatory really for a gooner. Coincidentally, it's also the day that Don Revie died so it was a strange day living in West Yorkshire.

Least favourite fixture, Everton away in the league.
Reason - Everton are always more up for it and really try their damnedest to win this one. I don't know the reason, maybe it's the spillover from the 1930s when Arsenal and Everton used to win the league between them, but Everton always play well.
I hate it at the end of the game when the so-called experts criticize Everton for being up and at 'em. The bottom line is it's about the 3 points and Everton always want them more than Arsenal and it's that which makes me dislike this fixture (not Everton).

I hate the Arsenal fixture too ,we rarely beat them and they seem to make the ball laser guided because our midfielders rarely get near it. Rooney may have one it for us with a great goal (still despise him though ) but they surely got their own back with that 7-0 lucky win . They were absolutely devastating.

I'm going to post my favourite all time 11 . They may not be the best players ever but they have always a big place in my heart. They are not all Toffees but understandably most of them are

    2 Pat Van Den Hauwe
    3 Stuart Pearce

Knowledge of the complex is wisdom.
