Something like this? (at a guess it's RTR 6 Gold on H/H)

Please note: this is not a bridge defense or a fight inside a settlement - it's on the open field (but, I guess it was only against the Ptolemaics......)

I have some other ones where a full stack Roman Army took on two full stacks of Bactrians and managed ot hang on - the first Bactrian Army's Elephants went amok in my lines and then the second army attacked. It may take some time to dig out though.

That`s nothing. Go and see MCM`s Imperator based aar. He kills 2000, 3000 enemies and loses 30 man or so of his own. Go figure.

At no point in my post did I suggest that it was the best. I've had better as well (and some phyrric victories).

Brusilov, I meant it as a light comment. I`m sure you can do(and actually done) better.

i always win hard battles (with bad infantry) if i have some cavalry. On every difficulty level.

    all battles:
    700-800 (me)
    vs
    1300-1400

    Kills:
    1300-1350 (me)
    200-350

MCM 30 losses?? Lol, i'm very curious, there are some vids online?

There was an old game called Centurion, it was great. Kind of like R:TW except 20 years earlier. Well there was a strategy that would kill about single digit soldiers on your side and slaughter thousands of enemy soldiers, good times.

As I'm writing an article about RTR, I have had to search for some roots of RTW and I have stumbled upon Centurion: Defender of Rome. Hugely fun game, given that it was released in 1990! I was surprised to see it still worked on my XP platform. Those who have no idea what it is like should try it - it takes no more than a minute to download from here: http://www.geocities.com/rod_centurion/brindex.htm

It will look hauntingly familiar! Remember - this was done in 1990!!!

The GeoCities web site you were trying to view has temporarily exceeded its data transfer limit. Please try again later.

Looks like it took less than an hour for us to max it out.

Won't work on my vista system, even with compatibility activated.

I had dropped off three legions (following the Guide to Becoming a True Roman) on the Greek Peninsula (the Greek Cities had controlled everything up to Thrace, and into Seluicid Empire's territory). After several years, only one legion remained and four Greek 'stacks' were descending on it. It had no escape; sea was blocked by ships, and I could only go forward. The legion faced two, one after the other, surviving (they were made of poor quality troops).

I realized then that they were merely a tool to weaken me. Their last two armies advanced, composed of high-quality soldiers, including Spartans. The two attacked my simultaneously and it was an epic battle. In the end, my General decided to stand and fight to the death (He was a 'no retreat' kinda guy). His Tribune, also his son, survived the battle. The Greeks allowed passage back to Rome, so he did, disbanding the remaining soldiers upon arrival.

I don't have any screen shots, or number counts. I just thought it was pretty neat.. The whole, "legion's last stand" thing. I had great number results though for the first two stacks that attacked me. Final two I cut them down to about 40% before I was annihilated.

Wow, nice battle. I haven`t thought about fighting against two different faction armies at once. It`s hard to have it I think. They have to be allied and their armies need to be next to each other. Do you happen to have a picture of the campaign map of right before this battle? I`m curious as to how this has taken place.

Such battles are very rare... But I got lucky

    Here is the campaign map:

I'm at war with the gauls for a long time, but got peace with ilyrians not long ago. Gaul and Ilyria are allies so when gauls attacked ilyrians joined them. It was interesting to face a combined force of two factions.

I won this battle yesterday, as Iberians vs other Iberians (rebels) who I was besieging in Numantia. True, they were only rebels, but a lot of their units somehow had silver and bronze chevrons, and they had a family member leading them. Nothing beats the feeling of slaughtering your enemy to a man and then taking their city with minimal losses!

Here's a link for anyone still interested in the Centurion game.. gotta love those dos games.

1 problem is that the game is so old it has old sounds. But for 1990 it's not bad at all.

For me a "good" battle consists of suffering about 15-20% casualties. I haven't gotten a lot of heroic victories. I'll keep in mind to post my next good battle.

Thanks! I played this as a kid- this just brought a lot of nostalgia for me. Still remember the old tricks like letting the tiger claw at your shield in the arena to get the crowd excited..
