Default About to return this thing . . .

I bought it Sunday evening. I have reinstalled it four times (doing a full removal and registry clean each time). Every time I try to install the 1.2 patch, it hangs up and says the patch is corrupted. I have downloaded all 600+MB five times, from four different sources. Each time I get errors. I have never had this problem with other downloads, including a 550 MB download of a different game. I can run 1.0 for a bit, but get occasional random CTDs.

Only thing I know to do other than to return it is to buy Kingdoms and see if that solves the problem. Anyone have a clue whether that might help?

Oh, I am running a T2600 laptop at 2.16 GHz (dual core drives), using 2.00 GB of RAM and sporting an nVidia GeForce GO 7600 with 256 MB RAM (ForceWare version 84.54).

I can run other high end games -- what the heck is wrong with this one?

    Sigh.

If you are getting occasional CTD's I would guess your system isn't up to scratch. A laptop is probably the very worst to be running M2TW with so I don't recommend running out to buy Kingdoms just yet.

M2TW is a resource superhog despite you can run other high end games without problems. Even very high end desktop systems can cough running this game.

As for the 1.2 patch problem install the latest firmware for your DVD drive and disable Firewall, Antivirus and any other software running which might interfere. Also try this. Go to your control panel -> device manager -> there have a look for your IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers -> and there depending on your setup search the appropriate channel for your optical drive and go to -> right-click properties -> advanced options and change the transfer mode to PIO only.

Failing that, do a reinstall following this procedure

Depending on the type of error you are getting try also here
and at Sega Tech support here

Good luck at trying to run the game!

Sigh. I got it to run under 1.0. I think the problem with crashing was related to one of the 1.0 bugs the 1.2 version fixed (I was in a siege at the time). The laptop is a desktop replacement and seems to run other memory hogs just fine.

I am going to try buying Kingdoms to see if that helps. If not, I'll return both.

Oh -- and has anyone else noticed that SEGA customer support is, umm, nonexistent?

Decided to return it to an unnamed big-box retailer who promises to "Always deliver the low price --- Always!"

Although they have a policy against accepting returns of opened software (and erroneously told me it was against the law for them to do so), after going through two levels of managers (and remaining polite, calm, patient and friendly), they refunded my money.

It is a shame. I got the game to work for a few minutes, and the graphics look wonderful. However, the bugginess makes it unlikely I will ever return to this title.

    Sigh. I'll always have Rome!
