    Default Finding that music

I've realized that I have found many of my favorite songs (and bands) in some rather obscure places. I have "discovered" songs on youtube when watching various videos and also by tuning into some internet radio channels.

how do you "discover" new music? are you one of those that just watch MTV for your music fix or do you go search new music on your own?

Having not had access to mtv for the past 6 years (for the most part, anyway), and not really being into modern music anyway, I've developed a rather odd taste.

A lot of my interest is sparked by my dad - Bob Dylan, the Beatles, Skynyrd, Neil Young, CSN, Santana..

Sometimes I hear a cool song and think "hey, gotta check them out". This is mostly random (for example citizen cope and rhett miller were on Scrubs, or the Roots from a Kareem Abdul-Jabbar highlight video ((seen em live now, they're ace)).

Sometimes other people introduce me to new styles/bands (the Clash and Bright Eyes from an ex)

The vast majority of my favorite music is 'old' - a lot of it's from the 60's and 70's in particular.

Most of the reggae groups I like I found from reading about reggae.

I got into Nick Drake when I found out John Martyn's Solid Air was dedicated to/written about him.

    Life, go easy on me

Then I weighed him I said, “Holy ****!” because he weighs 900,000,000,000,000,000 tons. That amazing weight made me say the “S” word.

    www.last.fm

By far the best place to discover new music IMO, I've found hundreds of bands on there.

Mostly by reading up on music via the internet. Reading about music, learning what it is about a certain musical movement I like, then exploring the bands who are part of it - most of my musical choices are linked as a result. I'll slowly crossover into certain genre's, explore it, then move on based on certain aspects I like most.

Usually I read about the artist first, or I happen to find a cheap CD of theirs (good for pre-1960s artists). Things like Last FM just don't work for me, I tend to look for shoegaze music on programs like that and usually I just get some very amateur dreampop stuff, or a lesser track from one of the greats.

I tend to use Wikipedia to look up those artists I do like, see what genres they played and then similar artists. After that, it is only a matter of hopping on Oink or isohunt and downloading an album.

Do note though, that I buy my music assuming the album is worth the purchase.

I have been stuck with the same tastes for about 10 years (mainly Iron Maiden and 80's early house music )

but TWC and Ana members have opened my eyes to bands that have been around for ages and new bands.

    Bands I have discovered

    Avrigus
    Psychotic Waltz
    King Crimson
    Soulsavers
    Van der Graaf Generator

I usually discover great music through reading and the 'net. Amazon.com's "Listmania" and "So You'd Like to..." guides have been a vast repository of information on talented acts.

Definitely Last.fm. That website got me into Cream, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, and lots of others.

Last.fm is great, it's nice to see it get some more popularity, I remember last year there was a rather small thread of people listing their last.fm names...

I just found another good band on it, I love their 'neighbors' feature.

I used www.pandora.com, but it got banned in some countries (like Sweden), because it violates some laws. You should check it out, and if it works, well, lucky you.

It all started with the Beatles for me (though I listened to like, SOAD before that). From there, I just branched out all over the place. I used stuff like allmusic.com and wikipedia, as well as last.fm
