Default Suggest a good book to buy!

Whole summer I was working with my father. We were bulding a new house for our family. I was unable to work anywhere else as I was doing last summer. He didn't paid me, but offered to give me a reward for my work - to buy a book. Maybe someone will find it funny, but in my country good books are very expensive and assortment are poor. I've read all interesting books in local library so I was happy to hear this proposal.

I'm interested in Ancient Military history. Ofcourse book may cover more, but it's my preferance. It shouldn't be a novel . I prefer facts to fiction.

There was a fantastic thread in old RTR forums about books, but as you all know the forums are down.

So I need your advice what to buy. It might be even two or more books, but price mustn't exceed 80$.

    Thanks in advance, Artax

There is a section here for this too. Somewhere in the history section of twc iirc. Even a thread with people recommending good books.
    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=7
    This thread for example:
    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=60251
Otherwise, you need to be more specific on what exact period, state etc you`re interested in. It will help with the recommandations.

    I Suggest Adrian Goldsworthys(sp?) books, they're great.

I have two of his books:
The Roman Army at War 100 BC - AD 200
In the Name of Rome: The Men Who Won the Roman Empire

Of course Sun Tzus Art of War is good too, it never gets old. I haven't read these books but their titles look interesting: Warfare in the Classical world by John Warry and Making of the Roman Army by Lawrence Keppie.

I hope you have great time while reading.

Yes, he`s very readable. Has a certain style that many enjoy. To add to those, his "The fall of Carthage" is also a good book. Lazenby`s "Hannibal`s War" is also a very good book.

I just took both of those out of my college library this weekend. Both look excellent. He also gives off that sense that he's parsing the details and assertions of dozens of previous authors. The footnotes alone in The Roman Army at War are valuable.

As for a wider selection you can try flipping through the Europa Barbarorum bibliography. LENGTHY!

Wow, impossible.. $80.00 USD for a book?! Thats... Odd. What country do you live in? In the U.S.A books are EVERYWHERE some even for like $0.10 If books are that expensive in your country, buy a book on ebay or something.

I'm currently reading Rubicon: The Last Years of the Roman Republic by Tom Holland. Holland started out as a fiction author and this was his first history book (he has since written another one, Persian Fire) so this reads more like a narrative than a textbook.
I also just finished I, Claudius by Robert Graves. Haven't read Claudius the God yet though. Even though it's fiction, it should still be read by anyone interested in the Julio-Claudian dynasty.

I second this. Both Tom Holland's books are brilliant, and easy readable.

I will 3rd that! I've recently finished Persian Fire and I thought it was a very enjoyable read. He was able to provide background information on the founding of the Persian Empire and as well as Athens and Sparta. I think I have Rubicon somewhere but I am not so sure (I have a lot of books, maybe too many).

It's not historical but the "Foundation" series by Isaac Asimov is very good (or indeed anything by him).
You could also try Arthur C. Clarke.

I think that`s the same with The Fall of Carthage. Only that they were released for different markets and named differently.

Is there a particular subject, nation or peoples that you are interested in? That would help me reccommend a selection for you.

The good new book cost ranges from 10$ to 80$ USD here. I know it's a huge sum, so I'm going to buy from eBay or through my friends in US.

Carthage, Alexander and Successors. Also Rome, but priority goes to the first ones.

Asimov wrote some history books (indeed I believe he wrote many) of which I have read 2. I can't remember what they were called but they were about the Greeks and the Romans. They may be out of print (the copies I borrowed certainly weren't new) so it could be expensive to get hold of them.

If your looking for a book on Alexander, there are alot of them. Just search Ebay or google. Alexander is a very interesting topic to have a book on. I just usually watch the History Channel, so I know alot about him. Oh, and what country did you say you were from?

I'm from Lithuania and still live there. If you don't know where it is just look on the map to the east of the Baltic sea .

From classic I suggest Gaius Julius Caesar " Commentaries"
If u are interested in early medieval history I suggest from Amin Maluf "Samarkand" or "The Crusades Through Arab Eyes " or from H.N. Turteltaub "Justinian" if not well...
