    Default Medieval II: Crash-a-thon

It was hard to find a thread dealing with my exact issue, given the proliferation of crash, freeze, can't install, can't run, unspecified errors and "please help me beggin u" threads. I did eventually find one, but there were no replies.

I just did a fresh re-install of M2:TW and Kingdoms. I understand Kingdoms comes with patch 1.2 and 1.3 included. No errors in install. Brand new computer, brand new ATI Radeon X1650. dxdiag is fine.

I was able to play as Wales with very few problems, only a few freezes which required a hard reboot, as I've come to expect from M2TW. However, whenever I try to play as England, either the game freezes immediately on starting a new campaign, or, freezes when I open the family tree, or, freezes when I start a diplomacy. Hard reboot always required and sometimes I get the Blue Screen of Death.

My system log complains that it cannot find a whole shwack of files, and when I go look at the paths at which the game cannot find the files, well, that path doesn't even exist-- my mods/brittania/data folder doesn't even contain the sub folders the files apparently live in.

WTF is up with this expansion? Why doesn't it work out of box? Why did I pay $25 for this thing? Why can't CA or nVidia or ATI or Bill Gates or whoever is at fault this time just make a product THAT WORKS??

Anyone with a fix to this issue would be my personal hero for eternity.

If I have to sit around waiting for a freakin' patch (AGAIN), I will, and I promise, never buy another SEGA or CA game again. I'm sick of crap products. I know a lot of effort went into this game and it is a great game, but, end of the day, I want to play it, dude, not be constantly stymied by it over and over in every single patch and incarnation of it. It's just not OK that the game, bottom line, doesn't work properly.

If it were just me or a handful of people that experienced problems, fair enough. But it isn't. It's a sizeable portion of the consumers. NOT OK.

Blue screen of death = some hardware failure. I'm guessing it got damaged somehow in the move from Wales to England. Open up the case and check that everything is connected and inserted properly.

Can the BSOD also be caused by out of date drivers? On my old specs, this happened a few times and then I updated my Nvidia drivers. It stopped happening.

That is possible. But I don't think new drivers are the answer to this guys problem. The guy is right about Sega and CA. We can only hope CA goes bankrupt and the Total War franchise is sold to another studio, which knows how to build a game that actually works on todays hardware...

Another studio that makes it work better on todays hardware yet gets the rest wrong. Yes great exchange.

My problem is, I just bought a brand new ATI graphics card because my less than a year old Nvidia card crapped out, I suspect through overheating. It was never a problem until I started playing M2TW.

Immediately upon install the new card still isn't working well for me. I get the crashes explained above. This is ridiculous: the game destroys my nvidia card, and I buy a nw ATI card which doesn't work properly with the game, either.

I'm not a hardcore gamer and this is the only game I really play. I tested the new ATI card playng som Oblivion, which is super graphics intensive, and it worked great: no crashes, nada. Then as soon as I play M2TW, crash, crash, crash, blue screen, infinite graphics loop.

It is true I am having driver problems with f-ing ATI as well, as straight out of the box the drivers on the CD wouldn't install and gave redonkulous error messages. I had to do a microsurgery to install the right drivers and so now I really just don't know what part of the freakin' process is causing the errors: if it's some crappy programming in the game, if it's crappy programming in the drivers, or crappy manufacturing of the card, or some combination of the above.

All I want, in my freakin' life, is to be able to buy a game and a graphics card, install them out of the box, and HAVE IT WORK PROPERLY. I frankly don't care anymore who's at fault. The fact that I pay money and don't get what I want is driving me mad.

Why is it so impossible to buy a product these days that actually works? WTF is wrong with these people???

I also was having problems with my computer rebooting during MTW2 and other graphic heavy programs.

Unchecking the Automatically Restart under Startup and Recovery settings stopped my computer from rebooting but it would still lock up.

So the computer I have is recent and is a dual core. Some programs don't really care for the dual core including MTW2. Setting the affinity for the programs to use just one core has resolved my crashing problems. Here is a link to the solution I used http://forums.megagames.com/forums/s...ad.php?t=51366.

    Hope this helps.

It is very true game companies are to worried about deadlines. I dont know about other people but i would definatly be willing to wait a while for a game to come out and have it work that have it come out after being rushed and not have it work right... another example of this problem is Gothic 3 great game but doesnt work.

It might be a lot of work, but reinstalling your OS might be worth a try. Especially when you've got new hardware installed. Most drivers cannot be completely removed, and tend to cause all kinds of problems.

Furthermore, both the ATi and the nVidia control panel have quite a few options. Have you checked them? If you don't know what these options imply, take a look here: http://www.tweakguides.com/.
