Character Names Project Mod v 3.99 for Stainless Steel v5.0

    *****

NOTE: These mod files are meant to be used only with Stainless Steel v5.0

    *****

    Updated 14 October 2007

The Character Names Project's goal is to overhaul all of MTW2's character names lists so that they are as historically correct as possible. A secondary goal is to increase the number of names in each list, therefore creating a more diverse character (specifically family) tree in a MTW2 campaign. This is being done to address the problem of vanilla MTW2 having names lists which contained errors of all varieties, and the problem that they contained too few names. For more information, please visit our forum here.

    *****

    What you will see:

1.) Authentic period names (with proper spellings and accents, etc.)
2.) More diversity amongst names (the modified lists are larger than the vanilla lists)
3.) All families will start the game with surnames/bynames
4.) Popes will have proper regnal names
5.) 24 factions with entirely new character names lists
6.) Factions titles, ie. King and Prince, in native languages and grammar
7.) Common regal names will appear more often for their factions
8.) Family trees reflect reality better

    *****

    Portugal [~250 names. Authors: Manji]
    Scotland [~180 names. Authors: finneys13]
Sicily [~370 names. Authors: SicilianVespers & Black Francis]

    Turks [~430 names. Authors: chgo]
Venice [~320 names. Authors: deRougemont, Manji, & Re Berengario I]

This download is a RAR file containing the revised character names lists created at The Character Names Project forum. Included are five files:

    1.) descr_names.txt
    2.) names.txt and names.bin.strings.txt
3.) descr_strat.txt for both early and late eras, in seperate folders
4.) expanded.txt and expanded.txt.strings (optional but recommended - to give factions Royal Titles in their native language)

    *****

Copy these files into the following directories, remember to back up first:

    I.) Copy the descr_names.txt into your "C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\mods\Stainless_Steel\data" folder.

II.) Copy names.txt and names.bin.strings.txt into the "C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\mods\Stainless_Steel/data/text" folder. [NOTE: You will have to create the "text" folder inside your "data" folder and then copy the names.bin.strings.txt file into the "text" folder.]

III.) Copy expanded.txt and expanded.txt.strings into same the "C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\mods\Stainless_Steel/data/text"

IV.) Copy the descr_strat.txt inside the 'Early Era' folder into your "C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\mods\Stainless_Steel/data/world/maps/campaign/imperial_campaign" folder. [NOTE: make sure to create a backup of your original descr_strat.txt file!]

V.) Copy the descr_strat.txt inside the 'Late Era' folder into your "C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\mods\Stainless_Steel\data\world\maps\campaign\custom\Late_Era_Campaign" folder. [NOTE: make sure to create a backup of your original descr_strat.txt file!]

VI.) Run SS 5.0 as normal

    *****

To uninstall, simply delete the three files you added, and rename your
backup of the descr_strat.txt to descr_strat.txt. Then delete the batch you created for this mod.

    **********************************************

There you go everybody, it seems to work fine.

Can KK confirm if Jerusalem uses the same family tree system as the Teutonic Knights, ie. none? Because that is what Jerusalem is doing now, and that is unhistorical. The Teutonic system would suit other factions though, like Venice.

I would like as much feedback as possible on this, especially any CTDs, CNP was having problems before, I hope this is the most bug version yet.

Edit - Only the expanded files for save game compatible, effectively.

Actually, could KK stick this or add the link to a sticky page, otherwise people won't see it?

The fix was probably the one that removed the German text, it has no relation to this

Just a quick question. In the current SS 5.0 data/text folder, there is a existing file "names.txt.strings" but no existing "names.bin.strings". Should "names.bin.strings" be placed in this folder not replacing any file? Or should it renamed to "names.txt.strings", replacing it?

Please check for me and thank you in advance.

Just depose of whatever file that has names and strings in its name, and add the new files.

Good stuff, once I get no more problems by next weekend, I hope CNP will be bug free and can realise CNP 4.0 finally.
