    Default Unit Count

Okay, hello everyone. For about a year or so now, I have been enjoying RTR. I originally spent around $20.00 on R:TW but the cds broke, So I spent another $20.00 on the R:TW Gold edition, which contained both BI:TW and R:TW.

I enjoyed both of them until massive BOREDOM overcame me, just as all of you. I downloaded a few Major Mods like, Rise of Persia, Napoleanic Total War, etc. But got bored with all of them. Once I discovered RTR, everything changed.

My lust for this game became too strong to handle. I had the first RTR version, so everything was outdated. I recently just downloaded the RTR: Platinum Edition 1.9.

Ive been looking at some screenies of games, and it seems that the max unit count was usually 160-120. Tho in my game, it was 60.. I was flabbergasted, is there any way to make the unit count higher? Its really boring fighting with a small count of 1000 units, when I could be attacking with Legions of 10,000.

I recently started playing the Romans (Who doesent >.>) But the empire that really interested me was Illyria. The first time I played this, I found myself actually challenged. I usually play all of my games, very hard/very hard. I think of myself as a veteran player.

But even that does not make me excited. But with the Illyrians I have the Greeks ands the Macedonians constantly warring, and I cannot ally with both.

I decided to recently help the Macedonians on the greeks, but I fear this might be a HORRIBLE decision. Sooner or later the Macedonians will look upon me as a easy foe. Any Ideas on how to stop both the Greeks, and Macedonians continuously attacking eachother?

Its making me really worried. If the greeks win, Im screwed. If the Macedonians win, Im screwed. Theres no way out of it.

I have a fairly large Naval force, but Rebel pirates keep sinking them. It'
le be hard to march my armies to the east without Naval traveling. So, there goes that Idea >.>

Well, thanks for reading. Help me figure out the unit count situation, and the Illyrian situation, and ill be very greatful =)

In the options menu open advanced options and there is a setting called "Unit Size" if I remember correctly. Change the option to HUGE. Then you will have the max amount of troops available. Or you can edit preferences.txt file. Find the line UNIT_SIZE and change the number to 160. Both ways will have similar effect.

Try keeping the power balance. If Macedonians will start winning then help greeks or vice versa. You can give them money, fight against them, blocade ports or anything you think will hurt the winning side. When the time comes you will be able to crush them, but don't let them to win against one another.

Btw, welcome to the RTR forums!

I played the Illyrians while I was a beta-tester for RTR Gold and really enjoyed them too. They're quite a refreshing challenge from some of the more powerful other factions in-game at start.

I found the Illyrians military to be not the most interesting.

Now the Numidians... theres a fun faction!

And probably the most important question that everyone missed:
    CHANGE VIDEO SETTING: UNIT SIZES
The max size of a unit is 240 (different units have different sizes)
So I'm guessing with 60... that means you were on normal settings
    Max sizes:
    Huge: 240
    Large: 120
    Normal: 60
    Small: 30
Don't forget also... this majorly affects balance! Bigger unit sizes drain your population faster... and for example phalanx are better on bigger unit sizes. While cavlry are imo worse.

RTR is balanced for huge... so the best play experience is on that.

For a discussion on playing as Illyria, check this thread:

My advice is to help the Greeks against the Macedonians, as the Macedonians are stronger on the peninsula. Sooner or later, the Greeks would betray you, so you probably should prepare to fight both. The plague tactic discussed on the the thread works pretty well to let you take them both out piecemeal.
