Default Is there any hope left?

Due to RZZA's desire for newer threads in the TD, I have created one.

Is there any hope left for the future? I don't think so. Climate change. Peak oil. Resource depletion, overpopulation, pollution, the list goes on. Are we doomed to die a slow, painful death? Or can we survive into the next century?

    Discuss.

we will survive life finds away Resource depletion is not really a problem as we have alternative energy sources ready or almost.

and yes we do need more new threads.

The problem is that these new energy sources are either expensive, or at the moment don't have an effective energy ratio (solar cells are only 20% efficient, IIRC). So even if we do get these new "alternative" energy resources, its going to take a lot of money. I can smell depression... and death.

I was expecting someone to start a thread about anal itch, but this works fine too.

Are we doomed? indubitably. Its a fun ride while it lasts though. Before any of that stuff you listed kills ya, you will die of natural causes, so yes we're doomed.

We've been doomed from the start.

Well i dont think any member of this forum is doomed but the children and grandchildren have a lot of problems to remove or die.
These fine gentlemen's have thanks to their consistent idiotic posts have earned their place on my ignore list: mrmouth, The Illusionist, motiv-8, mongrel, azoth, thorn777 and elfdude. Yes there is future.
    Climate has always changed.
oil? who needs oil? Nuclear and fusion, please.
Resources? Space mining (in future) and recycle.
Overpopulation? im afraid that the "over" will die anyway..
    Pollution? Technology advances.
    Nice thread Doctor!

switching from the horse to oil didn't spell depression. Hmmm I wonder why???
Sure I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is Im not. I honestly feel that America is the best country and all other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism.

Nice retort. Remind me to put it in the Hall of Fame.

Because oil is CHEAP, whereas the transition from oil to other energy sources, while better in the long run, will not be good in the short. I'm sure YOU'LL be fine, you'll just have to give up your car. I'm more worried about the Third World nations, the ones that rely on support from the West. What happens to them when aid stops coming in?

That's what I'm worried about. My children. And probably that my last days won't be easy.

From coal to oil perhaps? And before that from wood to coal? Because I don't remember the last time we burned horses to produce energy.

And to answer your question, assuming there was one, mankind never depended so much on a single source of energy at any time in the past.

While there always were methods of transport for people and goods alternative to the horse (when we did not burn it for warmth of course) the alternative sources of energy are scarce, with much lower efficiency ratio and most important: retrofitting the existing infrastructure especially in developing countries like China, India and Russia in order to profit from alternative sources requires huge amounts of (here it comes) OIL.

    It probably wont affect me.

Although Oil will run out in my lifetime, or it might be Gas. I know one will, Coal wont though.

    Score!

Well, if I were to continue along this line of thought, one would suppose we should start building spaceships to colonize Mars and the Moon...

Hundreds of Billions of dollars later, a few hundred humans are living in biospheres on an inhospitable world, and another that will take decades to terraform. We can mine asteroids for resources, but settling on other worlds in the solar system will not be a long term solution.
