The recent tug-of-war between the US and Russia is alarming to me. The majority of the tension is probably the result of recent US proposals to install a missile defense shield in Eastern Europe. First of all, I think the US has no right to install anything like that in a European country, even with the consent of the respective countries. It's stupid. Secondly, if the European nations do allow/consent to the installation of the shield's elements, Russia should STFU and and settle down.
I'm tired of Russia disrespecting the sovereign rights of Eastern European and Baltic nations. Russia is not the hegemon of Eastern Europe and should stop acting like it.
It's my opinion that European countries, through the EU, should adopt a more proactive and independent policy. Europe has great potential to act in its own self-interest without the interference of Russia and America. I see both as overstepping their boundaries.
Why hasn't the EU taken a more proactive role in it's defense and foreign policy? What are we waiting for? A strong, unified voice from Europe would likely diffuse the situation between Russia and the US, anyway. The institution of a singular European voice would provide a mediating role between the newly-awakened Russian giant and the Puttering American giant.
It has been the precedent offered by history which alarms me. Russia has always sought to dominate Eastern Europe. My home country of Poland has been a victim of Russia aggression, several times in the past. I fear for Europe as a whole when considering what can happen when things get out of control.
I think that Europe can't afford to simply stay quiet, especially when the US and Russia are throwing threats at each other. If there is going to be another Cold War, Europe needs her own voice.
