Default Proposal for a new medal (yes, seriously!)

now, this may come as a shock to many people, Tac proposing a medal but there is one that is missing.

There is one job on TWC that is pure, unadultarated pain, do it too weel and people say you are a dictator, do it averagely and people say you are crap, do it badly and you come close to facing an ostrakon.

Not only that, but it is deadly, deadly dull, boring, shoot yourself in the head/gnaw your foot off to escape type of a job.

and the various brave souls/nutters that have volunteerd for it deserve absolutely to have a medal (if only to remind them never to be that daft again.

I would therefore like to propose (drum roll......) as a medium size medal (trumpet fanfare):

    Curator's Gavel
The award is divided into three classes. The Bronze Gavel is awarded to any member who has served as Curator for any length of time. The gold gavel is awarded at the discretion of the Curia to exceptionally good Curators - this would be decided by a simple majority vote in the Curia.

The third category, the Tin Gavel, is for people that were elected Curator but never actually took up the post.
: - It's my smilie and I'll use it if I want to......

I don't support the current proposal.

No, I think not... a medal, which doesn't change, for holding Curial post, perhaps (CdeC, Curator, other curial Officers); that'd be good. This, not so much.

An award for holding any curial post would be better than the current proposal in my opinion.

I would support this. I'm all in favour of extra awards for deserving individuals & the Curator's job does seem to be tediously important. However I don't see the need for the Tin Gavel, if you didn't take up the post why should you be rewarded?

i whole-heartedly endorse people getting medals for doing this particular job. tac is entirely right in his description of it as "deadly, deadly dull, boring, shoot yourself in the head/gnaw your foot off to escape type of a job."

however, two issues with the current proposal
1/ the whole tin gavel thing? ummm....
2/ under the current wording, most of the people who have done the dull boring work in the past wouldn't qualify, because they were pro-curators, not curators. for a time, Curator, as head of the Curia, was merged with an admin post, and the pro-curator was appointed by him to do much of the work, so only really Spiff, SR and myself would qualify. Should be opened to the Pro-Curators of the past as well.

Surely they get the moderator's mace anyway? As they are moderators, nothing more, just with a specific forum with slightly different needs.

well according to my VoNC i was not in fact a moderator of any kind, and got attacked by several people for acting on reports... so apparently not

and the Mace itself is only awarded to people who have served as Staff Moderators, as in people in the Moderation branch

EDIT, ok so Tac beat me this time lol

I would support a version which gives the medal to pro curators as well as Curators.

I also agree that it is one of the most boring and thankless jobs at TWC - although I doubt that many people will give it up.

I would disagree with this classification, what changes the classification of a staff moderator from a local moderator?

The ability to access the moderator cp and see the Moderators den - I cant do either therefore I am a local moderator (like a local moderator in the hosted mods sections) not a staff moderator - although it has virtually no effect on doing my job. The last Curator who was a Staff moderator was Scottish Ranger - which was just coincidence.

While I'm all for giving credit where credit is due, the Bronze and Gold awards seem too mutable and indecisive.

The Tin award is a mockery and encourages folks to pretend do some work for the community. To win a vote and not take up the office you were voted for is a grave injustice in the committee system. This kind of behavior is the kind I would never want a child to ever pick up. Why should someone get any kind of medal, even if it is meant in jest or negatively? No, I am sorry but it makes fun of all of those who ever tried to do something good for the community by doing their duty; it promotes those who could-care-less and with misanthropic attitudes to come, win, and then leave with a shiny new badge of their deceit.

    Curator's Gavel
There are two levels of Curator's medal. The Bronze Gavel is awarded to any member who has served as Curator for at least one month. The gold gavel is awarded at the discretion of the Curia to exceptionally good Curators - this would be decided by a simple majority vote in the Curia.

How about this. It probably is a pretty tedious job and deserves some kind of thanks.

When do we put up the admins "tankard" medal Tac..?

I'd say Halie's version is what is known as "sensible" and "good", at least outside the madhouse that is the Curia.
