Default Medieval Patching Debacle: An Inquiry

I have experienced some pretty severe problems with MTW2 since they moved into v1.2 and beyond. That seems to be the point where things have gone downhill. I can play the game flawlessly on 1.0 and 1.1, even supporting up to 6000 units before my system begins to slow down at all. My graphics card is 512 MB NVIDIA with current drivers and I have a 2.67 dual core with 2 GB ram. There is no problem with my system.

And yet, I cannot get 1.2 or better to work. At first, every download of 1.2 I tried was corrupted; no matter which mirror I chose. How sad is it that a game company cannot even host their own patch on a reliable company server? So I finally hear that Kingdoms has 1.2 on the CD, so I go out and buy Kingdoms. Well, at first it kinda worked. It installed 1.2 and then failed to install 1.3. Repeatedly. For hours. I tried everything recommended by like 100 people on the forums. Nothing works!

So I copied v1.2 installer to my hard drive and tried to just install up to v1.2. It worked! But then the game crashes during the loading sequence. I tried everything recommended on the forums for just getting to 1.2. No success. Crash after crash, I never even got to the main menu with 1.2. So I end up actually returning Kingdoms to the store and getting my money back.

Now here I am playing and modding in version 1.1. AI still stands there like a retard when it gets shot by arrows, but other than that it is tolerable.

My question is this: Why is this happening? I have played since Shogun. Every game, every expansion. No problems. With four different PCs over the years. What is going on now that is causing this craziness? Are they just not devoting the resources to develop a stable patching system? I dont even know if Kingdoms will install because 1.3 wont work and it is forcing me to install it first.

Why are these patches so poorly designed that tons of people cannot get them to work? I read the forums, I mod games, I fix computer problems at work all day long, and it just wont work. And Kingdoms is the first expansion pack for any game I have ever owned that wont even install without crashing on me. If that isnt poor design, I dont know what is.

If someone with my level of computer sophistication cannot do this, what is some poor schmuck who doesnt know diddly squat supposed to do? Just play 1.1 forever?

    Your thoughts on this debacle?

What OS are you using? I'm running Vista 32-bit, and it won't let me install two things one after the other, e.g each separate campaign in Kingdoms, or the BF2 complete collection. Have to do it all separately.

I am running XP. But I am not looking for technical help in this thread. I have already tried that on 8 different forums I think. I am looking for thoughts anyone has on why CA has screwed up this patching junk so bad.
