Default The Old Debate on Symbols

So, I went Youtube Hunting and I found three interesting clips.

and finally, I found this guy. He makes very good points, and pretty much debunks the first vid. I could not find who'm he was replying to sadly, they probably deleted their own video.

The Confederacy feared abolition but Lincoln wasn't even calling for that all he was calling for was for no more slave states to be admidtted to the Union.

Unfortonatly this thread is about to be spamned by Rockwell Libetarians (Louis Rockwell is a closet bigot Libertarian who says the south had a right to suceed and supports slavery)

    Or Neo confederates.

Lee May have been against slavery but most of the south was not most of the south believed in the right to keep slaves, and fought for their belief in that right. Yes there was some thought that washington was overextending its power in other fields but the main reason was slavery.

Come to think of it, this is in the wrong forum.

I don't know why I didn't put it in the ethos. Could a mod move it?

A symbol is only a picture until somebody gives it meaning.

Over time, however, such symbols retain that meaning, and thus can be thought of as representing something by themselves.

I have a confederate flag in my room. Symbols have different meanings to different people.

To me the flag represents William Fry, my great-grandfather, who fought with Lee to protect his home. He didn't own slaves, he just was poor white trash who loved his homeland. To me the flag represents his bravery, his dedication.

However people do have to realize that symbols mean different things to different people. I don't go around waving the flag because it can very easily offend black people. To them it is a connection to slavery and racism, quite understandably.

So really its a mixed bag. People should have the right to wave it as they please, but I think more people need to have personal responsibility and think how their actions will affect others.

    With the exception of Earl...

So far I've been warned of what to expect....and no one has addressed the videos other than one of them has really small text.

I especially want to know how you feel about the last guys vid.

Well it was certainly well done, but im not sure I fully agree. I think he downplays the role of slavery in the civil war a little too much. I constantly argue with people that it wasn't about slavery, but slavery certainly had a huge role in the war.

The confederacy was by and large racist and I can see why people would associate it with racism. However to me that is a moot point. To my great-grandfather it wasn't about slavery, to your average soldier it wasn't about slavery, hell to your average yank it wasn't about slavery. So I think people merely need to respect that different people interpret symbols differently.

But that thing about the Kentucky wall, that was really sad
