    Default mod advice?

    Hi all fellow players
ive had somehow enough of good old RTW and with me BI that crashes, I decided to ask you - which mod to download and try? To add, im fan of Roman armies and Europe fighting in the given centuries, so no medieval nor asia mods.
I also do have both rtw and bi on one dvd so my installation is automatically with BI if any mod might have prob with that, dont mention it

    looking forward to help

    thanks

*edit* im open for BI mod suggestions as well

infantry with flank positioned cavalry men as I said I love Rome, and also I wouldnt like a mod that changes it too much. I have RTR on HDD but that didnt really fill the expectations at all (2 min loading every screeen is too muchh))

    .....

    gameplay style doesnt mean formations...

    it means:

attacking enemy constantly/ or alternatively playing defensive

do you enjoy battles or campaign more?

XGM maintains the vanilla feel while adding tons of new units, and factions. Try it out.

well, i don't like the romans in XGM, their non-vanilla skins make them seem out of place in a world full of vanilla style units.

If you like challenging campaign and want a total conversion mod, I recommend Europa Barbarorum. No unit looks the same, and the campaign is much harder.
Asking for rep is a sure fire way to not receive any, at least from this old cynic.

    To answer.
I enjoy both campaign and the battles, but I wouldnt probably like total conversion mod, and nor mod adding tons of units sounds good. Dont know why but I dont like too many units (or too low - RTR). Just a healthy mix

A healthy mix then is XGM. Slower battles, some nice surprises, new units, but not too many. Nice AOR units. As Rome you face Pyrhus in the first turns... XGM is really easy to install, doesn't override the original game and with BI you can have shield wall, night battles, swimming and such
I hear lots good things about Roma Surrectum and will definetelly try RS version 2 when it comes out. They have probably the most indepth version of the roman faction.

ive downloaded whats name is I believe SPQR 6.4F that´ll ill put to a test. Last mod I had was the RTR, but given the fact that Roman apparently had just ONE legion type for late times, no archers (UH?) and suckie cavalry + truly annoying loading times, I decided to delete and reinstall the game. Now im going for this mod. Once done with it, ill try another

I personally like the SPQR mod best. It has done a lot of changes and is meant to be played as the romans. All units get 2 hitpoints which means more realistic battles (and longer as well). You have a real feeling of roman legions with the stacks you start with. They're balanced as a real roman army and makes you feel like a real roman. They've also changed the unit skins, but don't changed every name and unit. Therefore its easy to adapt yourself, but it gives you variation to the game which XGM doesn't give you (sorry all fans of XGM. I don't like the mod very much, but that's my personal opinion). The romans are by the way more balanced to their neighburs, but don't give up when you loose a region or two in the beginning.

I wouldn't suggest to be negative about XGM or any other mod before you have tried them. Just like Roma Surrectum doesn't improve only the romans, XGM doesn't improve only the greeks. Just try them and decide for yourself.

Nice picking the SPQR! Write what you think about it as well! I wonder what the roma surrectum mod is. Could anyone tell me what it has done to gameplay etc?

Here is a link explaining what RS does to the game

    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=65725

Basically it condenses the 3 roman families into 1, adds 0 turn recruitment time for all units except boats and agents, adds loads more regions and units and uses the most beautiful campaign map I ever seen in a mod.
"So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night. So, Jeff Beck pops his head 'round the door, and mentions there's a little sweets shop on the edge of town. So - we go. And - it's closed. So there's me, and Keith Moon, and David Crosby, breaking into that little sweets shop, eh. Well, instead of a guard dog, they've got this bloody great big Bengal tiger. I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace, but the shopowner and his son... that's a different story altogether. I had to beat them to death with their own shoes. Nasty business, really. But, sure enough, I got the M&Ms, and Ozzy went on stage and did a great show."

I got the RS to work and gotta say that im impressed. Given first time I play it, its still bit itchy when it comes to loading times, but definitely the campaign map is awesome, and the 0 turn training is just great as you dont have to wait few turns to raise up army to defend the city. (although thats far from historical point of view but who cares right . Low unit upkeep and even a smarter AI when it comes to fighting. Good mod so far. Think tomorrow ill install RTW again to another folder and get another mod
