Turn a flashlight into a powerfull burning laser

DIYer Kipkay extracts the laser from a DVD burner and mounts it in a small flashlight to create a handheld laser burner that can light matches and burst balloons. Hit the play button to see how he did it. This project isn't for the faint of heart: it involves pretty specialized components and soldering, but that'll all be worth it when you're camping with your pals and you start the fire by pointing your homemade handheld laser at the tinder. For more info, Kip posted the laser mod over at Instructables, too. UPDATE: Several readers rightly point out that your burning handheld laser could pose a safety risk to humans, especially when pointed at eyeballs. Watch your kids, proceed at your own risk, treat as you would a weapon, etc. Thank you.

Happened to me once: a few grownups with a bit of booze in their system were teasing me with one of those little pointing lasers from another building. I just flicked out my lighter and flashed it back a few times, and I saw them collapse with laughter.

Had it been anything heavier, I'd have really ruined their decade, believe me.

You can blind people with that stuff. Keep that in mind - one second of it, and it's lights out, for good.

I'd hate to see the kids especially who live around my area get there hands on one of these

If it did happen i would want the courts to put a 5 year sentance on people who use these against anything.

It's hardly killer power, just enough to light a match or pop a balloon (or blind somebody). The lasers in your DVD drives are quite powerful, it's just pretty hard to shine one on anything while it's still in the housing!
