Default the easiest way to win 1 on 1

many times I have encountered a point in battle where the enemy throws his last unit of heavy armored shock troops to push through your defenses and many times you are forced to counter his advance with technically weaker infantry (but still comparable) which you throw against them as a last resort.

do you guys know the trick of how to defeat the enemy infantry one on one?

expand the line positioning of the troops. for example, lets say the enemy throws at you upgraded dismounted chivalric knights, while you only have standard heavy infantry...

the enemy usually advances in this manner (has three rows):

    ----[____________]---------
    ----[____________]---------

try to counter them head on in this manner (stretch until you have two rows):

    -[_____________________]---

you would be surprised that a unit with techincally superior stats will rout when you will still have 20-30 soldiers of your own. the only reason why it happens is that you reach superiority in active attackers (i.e. increase the damage dealt per second and this damage will exponentially grow with each slain enemy).

in this manner I managed to even rout a whole unit of upgraded Gotland Footmen which was charging at me (!) with my own unit of simple dismounted druzhina .

    I hope this helps.

As I allways say... the true strength of a commander is how thinly he can spread his forces sucessfully. However your troops are much weaker to cavlry attacks from behind, flanking and morale drops now.

Trouble is you leave your line very vulnerable to flanking or just a plain straight charge... or if you make it too thin, the line can be punched through before other troops can come and assist. It may work for some things but against a competent commander facing you, he knows how to counteract. Especially if he has cav superiority or missile units. If possibly face HI with cavalry... HI has not a chance verses even just mailed knights in competent hands. If you don't have that try to use high ground, love seeing those expensive units get cut to shreds by militia on high ground. Forest terrain can help to certain degree. Suppose thats general knowledge but just trying to say nothing is good if not used correctly and nothing is a "win all" strat.
