    Icon5 Help! Please!

Hi everyone. digging through the miles modding information i still have a few questions.

My current version is 6.0 gold and i love it. Can i upgrade to platnum without scrapping my savegames ive worked so hard on? If not, can I still somehow install BI without screwing my 6.0 gold? is there a way to switch mods easily without messing up everything? What changes in the game from gold to platnum? Does anyone have a date for the release of 7.0? And finally if some of theses things are possible, can you provide links?

I know theres a lot to answer but i would be eternally grateful if someone could answer some of these if not all. You would be my hero. And thanks to the modders. You guys made a good game an amaizing game.

No. Besides some differences in the text files not relating to the port, they are for different versions of the game.

No, again. Not in the same game folder anyway. If you`ve made a backup copy you can use that to install BI. If not, you`d need to reinstall otherwise you`ll end up with a single copy of meesed up RTR.

Not really. Some mods use the mod switch option that allows you to have more of them in one copy of the game and play the vanilla RTW/BI too, but they need to be created for this purpose. RTRPE v1.9 has a mod switch version for example and it can be combined with other mods that use this feature.
Also, take a look in this thread. It explains how to have more then one install of the game:

It beats reinstalling to have a copy of the unmodded game.
What changes in the game from gold to platnum?
take a look in the RTRPE FAQ:

It also answers your next question about what the mod switch version is.

If you have multiple installs of RTR based games then it's possible to have any number of games installed.

    See post #4 in the following thread;

    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=124124

    The following is a summary (this assumes you have RTW 1.0);

    install RTW 1.0
    upgrade to RTW 1.2
copy RTW 1.2 to 'Clean RTW 1.2 folder'
    upgrade RTW to 1.4
    upgrade RTW to 1.5
copy RTW 1.5 to 'Clean RTW 1.5 folder'
upgrade RTW to RTW BI 1.6
copy RTW 1.5 RTW BI 1.6 to 'Clean RTW 1.5 BI 1.6' folder

All official upgrades need to take place in the RTW default directory - basically the patches only work there while mods can generally be applied to any folder.

    To play RTR 6 Gold
Take a copy of 'Clean RTW 1.2 folder' and install RTR 6 Gold over it

    To play RTR PE
Take a copy of 'Clean RTW 1.5 BI 1.6' folder and install RTR PE over it.

I'd also suggest that you should launch the game after each step to ensure that the install/upgrade has worked OK.

This method does use up a lot of disk space, but this isn't a problem for me. If it was you could always just have two copies on your PC. The 'official' game folder and one of the many copies of the folder.

I always back up my saved games when I install a new version of RTR because I spent so much time on them and have grown attached to my glorious empires and so forth, but not once have I gone back to an earlier version. I think, especially going from 6.0 Gold to PE 1.9, that you may have a similar experience.

RTR 6 Gold is build base on RTW 1.2 engine while RTRPE is base on RTW 1.5 (with BI 1.6 influence included) so it's basically a different structure altogether. The save games from RTR 6 version will not with RTRPE games anymore.

I've done pretty much as Brusilov suggests and keep virgin copies of 1.0, 1.2, 1.5 and 1.6 on my PC, ready for any Rome based mod that I want to play.

When I want to play a particular mod, I simply create a folder "ModA", or whatever, copy and paste the appropriate copy of R:TW into it, and then load the mod on top of it. It's quick, easy and when you've finished you simply delete the "ModA" folder and repeat the process for the next one.

Keeping the four virgin copies of patched R:TW takes up just over 10 Gb's of Hard Disc space and may be an issue to some. If your PC has the ability to burn DVD's you could free up this space by burning the four virgin patched copies onto four DVDs, which have enough space each to take one copy of R:TW (I do find the non-rewritable DVD's a bit more reliable than the rewritables).

Then you can use the DVD's as the source when you are copying your fresh copy of appropriately patched R:TW into your "ModA" folder.

Two things to bear in mind:

    1. Make sure that your DVD copies work before you delete the originals from your Hard Disc, or you'll have to start all over again.

    2. Remember that copying files from DVD to Hard Disc takes a bit longer than copying from Hard Disc to Hard Disc.

I find the above system works well for me and, if your DVD burner can handle double-layer discs, I see no reason why it couldn't also work for Medieval 2.
