    Default Nooo... suicide generals

    I just had a battle featuring my double silvered general vs a unit of viking raiders. I charged right at them and the only one among my troops that died in the charge was my general. The vikings all died pretty much instantly. Why do generals ride in the first line? Has anyone else had this happen?

    Try making them charge offset so your general does not go first in charge:

    G = General
    B = Bodyguard
    V = Viking Raider

    _VVVVVV
    GBBBBB

    Have them meet like this and you will avoid your general dying, even though this looks like luck, or no luck.

    But in reality I think generals did ride forward. Correct me if I'm wrong.

    They did. AlfonsoVIII, how... do you make them charge offset? If you charge at them, you will always be centering on them, and your general will be first.

    Well, charges work better if you click attack behind the enemy, so the charge actually works. Try that and trial and error will let you do what I have said in my first post.

    Yeah that's happened before, also what really pisses me off is when Adoptions fail. Like you'll accept them and then the message come up taht they "died suddenly". Well I think someone was unhapy with that dude ><

    Will they actually start charging (going extra fast and with lances forward) if not told to target something?

    The general's bodyguard usually works well enough on its own though.

    You could outflank them, like this

    v=Vikings
    b=Generals Bodyguard
    g=General

    bb -->
    bb --> vvvvvvvvvvvvvv
    bb --> vvvvvvvvvvvvvv
    bb -->
    bb -->
    g -->

    It's really hard to outflank someone when they have nothing else to focus on but your cavalry. They will turn. Also, I was in a tight space there in the central plaza, and wouldn't have had any room to gain speed for a charge if I tried to flank those vikings.

    This happened to me once, against TOWN MILITIA. Not Spear Militia, but TOWN MILITIA. I sat and stared at the screen for five minutes, totally dumbstruck. Man, I was pissed. I never forgave those damn English, either.

    Yeah well cavalry in general are very crappy in cities, which I think is as it should be. So charging cavalry in a town, expect poor results. Just imagine the coordination required to get a squad of cavalry to charge down a city street coordinated enough to stay in step AND keep their lances lowered!

    I have to shamefully admit that i witnessed UK police horse line charge during some trouble after a football match in the 90's. There was only a few horses, but very scary stuff up close and very intimidating when they are coming your way. I was very surprised at the manoeuvrability of the horse even on tarmac; they rushed down the road for about hundred yards before pulling up almost simultaneously, turning and cutting off runners they picked out. Lads were then pinned by the bulk of the animal while plod’s acting as collectors took over. It was then that everyone chucked what they could as the horses were stationary and exposed.

    Imagine the horror of seeing thirty or so coming down the road at you, not just three or four?

    I might just add that I was not part to the events just a mere spectator in the wrong place….honestly mister officer sir, god’s truth!

    What we need in MTW2 is Water cannon!
    There are two kinds of officers, sir: killin' officers and murderin' officers. Killin' officers are poor old buggers that get you killed by mistake.

    Murderin' officers are mad, bad, old buggers that get you killed on purpose - for a country, for a religion, maybe even for a flag!
