    Default Horrendous losses

What is it with RTW and horrendous losses on auto resolve battles? I recently decided to start playing Rome again, but I don't have the time to fight every fight, so those that I'm sure to win I auto resolve.

But the loss of men in auto resolved battles is horrendous. For example, 1222 good Roman units verse 121 weakling rebels.. I win but suffer about 543 dead. If I'd fought the battle myself I'd probs have only lost 50.

I guess its back to Medieval II if this problem is not correctable with a mod or something.

Autosave gives values to different types of units. Chariots for example get whopping high value on autoresolve. This makes fighting them on autoresolve absolutely stupid. Autoresolve is just really stupid and worthless.
I only use it for fights I have no chance of winning.

Another thing I've noticed about auto-resolves is that the lower your difficulty settings, the better the possibility of your average army over-coming it's foes.

I'd recommend not using auto-resolves for two reasons:

    - Too many friendly casualties (as you've mentioned)
    - The AI lets the enemy retreat letting them regroup

Plus, IMO, if you don't play the battles yourself you miss a HUGE amount of gameplay. If you always autoresolve then the only thing you'll do is send armies all over the place, recruit units and build stuff.
There are games that do that better, Civilisation for example. So just do the battles yourself and don't bother with autoresolve.

What's wrong with fighting your own battles? Fighting these tactical battles seems to be the biggest appeal of the game for me. If not, there are other kinds of strategy games out there that don't require you to micromanage your battles.

I don't mind fighting battles that mean something. But when I have to fight multiple and worthless battles every turn it gets tedious and takes hours to get anything done.

And what difficulty are you on?

It's all about the difficulty you play on, but you tend to get lots of experience with auto resolve.

Some units especially chariots are totally insane with auto.

I auto resolve unless its important or I could make it a crippling victory but for sure wins I just auto resolve, often enough for me(unless I'm on h/h or vh/vh) the AI loses less men than me but does less damage.

    The agony of choice, heh?

The average player (depending on the mod) usually finishes a whole campaign with the number of casualties Romans would have in a single battle.

The autoresolve (stupidly calculating, I admit) produces in time a much more realistic image of the losses and the fate of the enemy but deprives the game from more than half the fun.

Maybe the only way to counter the problematic battle AI (even using Darth or Sinhuet) is to play on very hard giving unrealistic bonuses to the AI units and risking the balance between AI factions...

perhaps the game designers did this on purpose to encourage their players to play the battles out themselves?
