Default your battle strategy in PDER

in my case i like to have an army with a good power of archers, heavy cav, and some infantry, the tactic is start attacking with archers, when the enemy charge against me i use the infantry to hold them and the heavy cavalry destroy the enemy flanks and rear.

its a defensive tactic, with the muslims armies its a very good strategy, the weak side is when you go against an army with a lot of heavy infantry, in that case the your cavalry and infantry are the key, holding the line until the archers find a good spot, thein the arrows make the work.

here's an example of what im talking:

this is the best army configuration for me

I generally have a good sized contingent of front line infantry, with twice that number of archers forming a double line behind the infantry...a unit or two of cav on each flank for protection. I'm an archer nut

I like to run different kinds of armies. I like Pope Fred's army config, and that's one of my favorites.

But because of the Real Combat deference to mounted units, I often make an army of cavalry.

Sometimes I just have an army of 7-9 generals.

I generally keep only two units of archers and the rest infantry and cav if Im fighting european armies but for fighting armies of cav archers or highly mobile units I pack more archers in my army.

Personally I enjoy the mass infantry battles. I like to watch the battle lines and how they move depending on match-ups.

I prefer just a bunch of different infantery (spear+melee) and some heavy cavallery to ride deady blows against the flanks and enemy archers.
But what I really like (the problem is that not every faction has some) are mounted archers with fastmove. They can easily outrun even enemy mounts (well, as long as they dont have fastmove aswell...)
and fire while shooting. with the kantabarantian circlet they also are invulnerable against arrows.
the only situation i like to bring along some archers is in both- attack and defence of settlements

I like to dvance with a long horseshoe formation of infantry in the front line , archers protected behind and cavalry in the 3rd line to move out to the flanks when the enemy get to my infantry..nearly as many archers as infantry. Then make sure I get a upward slope. Works every time against nearly any enemy. not got to gunpowder units yet though.

I usually have 3 Archers, 4 crossbow, 7 Heavy infantry (mostly 4 pikes/3 swords), 2 artilleries (when available) and what's left is always cavalry.

    1st line is cav--pike--sword--pike--sword--pike--sword--pike--cav
    2nd line is arch--art--arch--art--arch
    3rd line is cav--crossbow--crossbow--crossbow--crossbow--cav
    4th line (if any) cav--gen

I use first artillery (I first move the units that may be hit to avoid useless losses ) and ranged attacks to lower enemy's forces. If he has also artillery units, I take two cav, and flank them (usually, IA doesn't protect its artillery very well).

In general, I can fight in H in a 2/3 ratio without so much problem.

In more mountainous regions, or on bridges, where I am trying to draw the enemy in, I will often find the right 'square' on the board to stand on to draw them in; one where I can shoot with a **** load of archers and few infantry - one or two cavalry to clean up the mess at the end, after they all massively break! .

I'm a Napoleonic wargamer at heart and it shows in the way I organise my armies - lol.

I usually brigade two spearmen and one archer units together. The spearmen abreast and 4 or 5 deep and the archers 3 deep behind. I like to have 4 of these "brigades"; 3 in the front line and the fourth, preferably of elites, as a reserve behind.

I usually play as the Basileia ton Rhomaion (Byzantium) so my cavalry will be organised into 3 brigades of 2 units each. A brigade of horse archers on each flank and the third of lancers or kataphraktoi in reserve centrally with the general.

This brigade setup is pretty flexible and works pretty well for me whether I'm fight Catholic or Islamic factions. If I'm going to assault a city I might drop a horse archer brigade in favour of a couple of trebuchets, and sometimes I add a couple of archer units if I'm fighting the Turks or Egyptians.

My Rome based armies are pretty similar too. Who says I'm a creature of habit!?
