Spartan Spam

High money, say 100k (or unlimited another words). Your opponent picks Greece and then proceeds to spam spartans. i.e 20 units of fully upgraded spartans.

How do you deal with it ? This is not a trick question, i dont knwo teh answer, but i do know that this is the only spam in high money that i just cant find a consistant counter for.

Nothing can counter such thing.

You could kill alot of them with urbans I suppose.
And Upgraded missile cavalry would do some damage.. not much though.

yes, onagers will work if your opponent just sits there, however if someone sits and waits i will probably beat them anyway. Same with urbans, if you get time to unleash all your pillums (in back or side) it can work well too, but i suppose im talking about someone that attacks you, then i pretty much find it impossible to beat....high money only of course, in low money they are rubbish

Use another phalanx based faction like the selucids or the macedons, then have you're phalanx hold the spartans in place while your calvary ride around and flank them.

use a lower cash # i find 15000 to be the most balanced.

Im gonna try the small goat (basted of course in the milk of a Yak from the upper eastern slopes of Wootan moutain in Bhutan) , its the best solution ive heard so far. If that dont work, what will ?

Another phallanx based faction wont work im afraid. The only spear unit to come close to spartans is the sacred band and they will lose out against fully upped spartans. Horses will not do enough damage, ie. they will rout before they do enough damage to justify bringing them to the battle. The spartans, not sure about other spear units, have a double ended spear, so horse attacks from the back also most often get repelled. (i hope this is true, but i was told a long time back about double ended spear and just took it to be true. Never actually looked).

That has nothing to do with the skill of the unit in R:TW actually. It's simply a nice and historical touch.

The only way I can think of, is to charge a unit of very heavy cavalry or elephants into the line and very quickly charge an entire army of urbans/sacred band/anything else you can think of into the gap, possibly keeping up a bombardment of onagers. I'd still sacrifice the goat, though, just in case. By the way, hello wlnoble

I've never tried unlimited money before for the very reason that the game becomes extremely imbalanced (much more than it already is).

I wouldn't mind experimenting against an all-Spartan army at high denarii if you were my opponent. I have some ideas on how to beat it consistently, but this would be new territory for me.

Hi Prince, yes, next time i see you, lets hve some high money games, would be something diff to our usual 10k match ups.

Cavalier, you may be right, but havent you noticed how spartans survive pretty well against cav attacks from behind ? The double ended spear was explained ot me as the reason why by a guy that ate, lived and breathed the game. Not saying that makes him correct, but honestly , if you knew this guy, you wouldnt question too much of what he says.

I would use many a arrows! (the best fully upped archer unit there is!) how about elephants? (they are allowed) and don't forget the pikes of death! (javilns)

I would suggest fully upgraded beserkers...they always seem to work for me even though I haven't tried them against spartans. But they do shred elephants and praetorians to shreds.

I think fully upgraded Armenian Cataphract Archers will work..

I played many unlimited money in LAN games, and I had a game like this:

Enemy: 8 Spartans, 4 creatans,4 armoured hoplites, 4 general cavalry

My army: 5 armenian legions, 4 onagers, 1 general, and 10 cataphract archers..

I surrounded his spartan circle with CA, and shooted him with onagers untill they run out of ammo..

And, brought my legions closer to spartans and let them to use their pila. After pila throwing finished...

I charged from all sides at the same time...Result..mass Spartan Rout

Artillery. Bombard them slave-beating sumguns until they've taken 50% casualties. Then envelope and crush them with cost effective infantry, or, if you're feeling mean, just keep bombarding them.

As long as their not forming a noob box, you can use the classis hammer and anvil tactics (as the Seleucids, preferably). Use your SS pikeman to hold in place, spread them out so they don't flank you. About ten of them and ten cataphracts and/or chariots fully upgraded, smash their backs and use maces to destroy them.
