uninstall rome: total war i guess. once thats done delete the remaining files.

Yeah, sadly you have to completely uninstall RTW, delete any remaining files not removed by the uninstaller (get rid of EVERYTHING, seriously), then reinstall RTW, patch it, then install RTR.
I'd advise, in future, copying your 'Vanilla' RTW directory before installing any mods, so you have a safe copy in case you screw up a mod install, or decide you don't want the mod, etc.

If you have trouble installing Rome, try deleteting all RTW registry files, personally I had to, because I didn't uninstall it properly. 8[
