    Default Chariots -- how to counter them?

    I just finished a sweep of the map using the Ptolemaeic faction. Interestingly, outside of some difficulty against the Romans (expected, and countered), the toughest foes I faced were the British rebels and their verdammt chariots. The only tactical counter I could see involved massive amounts of heavy cavalry, all charging at once. This eventually eliminated the chariots, but decimated my cavalry. So, how could I have done this more effectively?

    If I have a lot of archers, then I kill chariots that way (don't forget to give them a spearman guard unit).

    Javelins are better - but you are unlikely to ever be in range.

    The way to kill chariots in melee is to stop them moving. You need something that can either catch them (light cavalry), or persuade them to attack you (slingers maybe). Once you have successfully engaged them, you need to pile in with a lot of infantry.

    Chariots have a bonus against cavalry, so don't allow your cavalry to have prolonged contact with them.

    Never use cavalry against chariots! There is only one thing on the battlefield chariots are able to kill and that is cavalry. Even the weakest infantry units can easily destroy chariots, for you see, chariots suck ass in melee. The problem with british chariots though, is that they avoid melee, so use missile units.

    I use archers and slingers against chariots. If they charge swarm them. One chariot unit surrounded by 3-4 infantry goes down very very fast as they stop moving and die. The trick is to get them to slow down. Use wide formation when they are shooting you with their arrows but if they charge you need to go tight to stop them. I seldom have many problems with chariots anymore but then I use a lot of ranged units in my normal armies. I never let my cav anywhere near a chariot as they die on touch generaly.

    Like most already said, missile units. Or get some crappy barbarian warbands and swarm them. The german merc works best, a lot of worthless spear-armed guys and free javelins too

    My preference is;
    Missile units to make the chariots run amok (hopefully, amongst thier own forces rather than yours) and then either heavy cavalry (to chase them down) or missile units to finish them off.

    Chariots may move away from the main battle whilst runing amok.

    The sheer volume of British troops can cause a problem.
