The War College: A Quotes Mod

This is a simple mod. It is composed of just two text files in a zip. Unzip everything in the file to mtw2/data and then move the quotes.txt file to mtw2/data/text. And back up your files. I shouldnt have to say it, but I figure some fool will complain if I dont.

I have always been unimpressed by CA's quotes for loading screens. Half of them dont even apply (ex. Martin Luther's thoughts on violence). So I made a little upgrade.

Just for reference; the original game comes with 119 quotes.

This mod contains 246 quotes. 74 are from Carl von Clausewitz, 51 from Frederick the Great, 35 from Máo Zédōng, 40 from Sun Tzu, 16 from Baron Antoine Henri de Jomini, 13 from Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli, and a few each from about 10 other notable people in history.

The quotes are all references to war, the art of war, and the psychology of war. I have chosen quotes that are applicable to the time period, despite the time period of the author. They all offer some insight into warfare.

Some of my favorite examples:

I tried to keep them short, a simple read for a simple loading screen. But I think it is a nice upgrade to the game and I appreciate all comments.

I found a typo, guys. Sorry about that. It is in the line

"Prudence bigs him strike while the iron is hot and use the advantage to prevent a second onslaught."

It should say "Prudence bids"

As a collector of such trivia, I will of course download and use, however slightly confused about not using Erasmus, right period, right kind of quotes eg.

I am going to update this mod this weekend. Please let me know if you have any good quotes to add. I have to fix an error in the mod that is causing the quotes over #119 to not display.

So bring your best quotes for inclusion:

PARAMETERS: QUOTE MUST BE A MILITARY OR WAR ORIENTED QUOTE. I dont want to hear about the suffering of children, God, or any other pansy crap either. Strategy, tactics, and war. Keep it bloody, not wussy. That is all.

In case anyone is wondering, I didnt update like I said because I am working on some transition images to include in the next release. I have been collecting the screenshots for them during playtesting of my larger unreleased mod of which this is a component, so it may be another week or two before I update.

If you want to keep giving me quote ideas I will include them. Thanks to Quark for his input so far on this.

Hope you don't mind but I have updated your mod so that all 185 quotes display. I haven't changed or added any quotes. I like the new quotes and yes they are much better than the vanilla ones.

I have updated the file in the first post to include 60 new quotes; 51 from Frederick the Great and nine others thanks to Quark's suggestions.

I have also included the fixes so that all the quotes display.

I found out that there are actually several quotes in the game that are skipped, the reference numbers skip over them in the original files so they never display. To see what I am talking about, look in the "lookup" files for quote 101. You will find 100 and 102, but 101 is skipped.

I had just extended the vanilla file, so MY quote 101 was skipped along with about 5 others that I found. I fixed this in the new version.

Hey everyone, I really like this mod, so I tried to input it into my game! The loading screens work fine, but I can't get the new quotes to work! The game just keeps showing the old ones, even though I deleted them.. What should I do??

But seriously, I couldnt get it to work in vanilla, but on the retrofit mod it works just fine, making me a happy camper!
